MOD Bear Paw QAL - Constructing the Big Bear blocks

Today's post is to provide the instructions for constructing the Big Bear blocks.

I have decided to make a BABY quilt size.

Step 1 - 5 were covered in the previous post: Constructing the Bear Paw blocks.

STOP: Stitch, Trim, Open & Press. The STOP method is the mainstay for the making of the blocks found in this pattern. To perform the STOP method, align a square (A) or rectangle (K) on the corner of the unit (Y) with right sides facing together. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner and sew along this diagonal line. Trim a ¼” seam. Finger press the seams open and then press with a hot iron. Press the seams open to reduce bulk.

Using the PARTS LEFT OVER and the pieces cut for the BIG BEAR Blocks:

Step 6:  Sew the PAW UNITS to the sides of the Background (C) rectangles. Use the STOP method to add the Light Brown (A) square to the end of the remaining CROSS SASHING UNIT. Use the STOP method to add the Light Brown (D) square to the Background (E) rectangle. Use the STOP method to add the Dark Brown (J) square to the Light Brown (G) rectangle. Sew this (GJ) unit between a Light Brown (A) square and a Light Brown (F) rectangle. Arrange the pieces as shown. Sew the CROSS SASHING UNIT onto the PAIR OF PAWS UNIT. For the bottom row, sew the PAW UNIT to the Background (C) rectangle. Sew the (ED) unit to the (AGJF) unit. Sew them together to complete the bottom row and sew this to the bottom of the CROSS SASHING UNIT to complete the block.

Step 7:  Use the STOP method to add the Grey (C) rectangle on the end of the Light Brown (K) rectangle.

Step 8:  Draw a diagonal line across the wrong side of the Background (A) square and the Light Brown (A) square. This is your guide line. Place the Background (A) square on the Light Brown (A) square and the Light Brown (A) square on the Dark Brown (A) square. Sew a ¼” seam on EACH SIDE the blue line from edge to edge, as shown in red. Cut along the blue guide line. Press the seams open and trim each of the resulting Half Square Triangles (HST) to 1”. Sew them together, as shown.

Step 9:  Use the STOP method to add the Light Brown (A) square on the end of the Background (L) rectangle. Use the STOP method to add the Background (J) squares on the corners of the Light Brown (M) and (N) rectangles. Use the STOP method to add the Light Brown (J) squares on the corners of the Dark Brown (M) rectangle. Sew the Dark Brown (A) square between the Light Brown (C) rectangles. Use the STOP method to add the Background (A) square on the end of the Light Brown (C) rectangle. Use the STOP method to add the Dark Brown (A) square on the end of the Light Brown (M) rectangle. Sew the Background (G) rectangle to the Dark Brown (G) rectangle. Along with the Light Brown (O) rectangle, sew the pieces together as shown.

Step 10:  Use the STOP method to add the Light Brown (M) rectangles on the ends of the Background (K) rectangle. Sew the Dark Brown (A) square between the Light Brown (C) rectangles. Along with the Light Brown (O) and (R) rectangles, sew the pieces together as shown.

Step 11:  Sew the Background (C) rectangle on the side of a PAW UNIT. Use the STOP method to add the Light Brown (U) rectangle on the end. Sew the Dark Brown (A) square between the Light Brown (C) rectangles. Use the STOP method to add the Background (A) square on the end. Along with the Light Brown (R) rectangle, sew the pieces together as shown.

Step 12:  Sew the Dark Brown (G) rectangle on the side of a Light Brown (YY) rectangle. Use the STOP method to add the Grey (K) rectangle on the left end and a Background (A) square on the right end.

Step 13:  Draw a diagonal line across the wrong side of the Grey (A) squares. This is your guide line. Place the Grey (A) squares on the Light Brown (A) squares. Sew a ¼” seam on EACH SIDE the blue line from edge to edge, as shown in red. Cut along the blue guide line. Press the seams open and trim each of the resulting Half Square Triangles (HST) to 1”. Sew them together, as shown, and add the Grey (S) rectangle to the bottom.

Step 14:  Use the STOP method to add the Light Brown (A) square on the end of a Grey (K) rectangle. Sew the unit made in Step 13 onto the left end and a Background (A) square on the right end.

Step 15:  Sew the Background (C) rectangle on the side of a PAW UNIT. Use the STOP method to add the Dark Brown (T) rectangle. Use the STOP method to add the Background (A) square. Use the STOP method to add the Background (A) and (D) squares to the Dark Brown (E) rectangle. Sew the units together as shown.

Step 16:  Sew a Dark Brown (M) rectangle to the Background (A) square. Sew a Dark Brown (A) square to the Background (M) rectangle. Sew the (MA) to the (AM) unit and sew a Dark Brown (C) rectangle on top. Use the STOP method to add the Dark Brown (T) rectangle. Use the STOP method to add the Background (A) square.

Step 17:  Sew the remaining HST (BB) squares together as shown. Sew the Background (G) rectangle to the Light Brown (G) rectangle. Sew the Light Brown (D) square to the HST (B) squares. Sew the other HST (B) squares to the (GG) unit. Sew a Background (C) rectangle to the side. Sew a Dark Brown (A) square to the Background (C) rectangle. Sew the units together as shown.

Step 18:  Sew the units made in the previous steps together as shown.

Step 19:  Use the STOP method to add the Light Brown (A) square and Light Brown (J) square to the Grey (P) rectangle. Sew the Light Brown (G) rectangle on the bottom.

Step 20:  Use the STOP method to add the Background (A) square to the Light Brown (V) rectangle. Use the STOP method to add the Light Brown (D) square to the Background (W) rectangle. Sew the Dark Brown (A) square between a Background (A) square and (C) rectangle. Use the STOP method to add the Dark Brown (A) square to the Background (D) square. Use the STOP method to add the Background (J) square to the Dark Brown (M) rectangle. Sew the (DW) unit to the (AAC) unit. Sew the (DA) unit to the (JM) unit and then sew the Background (X) unit to the side. Sew the pieces together as shown and add the Light Brown (L) rectangle to the top.

Step 21:  Sew the Background (C) rectangle to the Dark Brown (A) square and then sew a Background (Y) rectangle on top. Sew the Light Brown (M) rectangle to a Background (A) square. Sew the (BB) HST’s to the Light Brown (D) square. Sew the (MA) to the (DBBBB) unit and sew a Background (C) rectangle on the side and then sew the (YCA) on top. Use the STOP method to add the Dark Brown (Z) rectangle. Use the STOP method to add the Light Brown (A) square. Sew the Light Brown (Y) rectangle on top.

Step 22:  Use the STOP method to add the Background (D) square to the Light Brown (T) rectangle. Sew a PAW UNIT to the bottom. Sew this to the side of the unit made in the previous step.

Step 23:  Sew the Light Brown (M) rectangle to a Background (A) square. Sew the (BB) HST’s to the Light Brown (D) square. Sew the Background (C) rectangle to the Dark Brown (A) square and then sew a Background (Y) rectangle on the bottom. Sew the (MA) to the (DBBBB) unit and sew a Background (C) rectangle on the side and then sew the (YCA) on the bottom. Use the STOP method to add the Light Brown (Z) rectangle. To make the foot, use the STOP method to add the Background (D) square. Use the STOP method to add the Background (J) and (A) squares to the Light Brown (C) rectangle. Sew the Background (A) square to the side. Sew this foot to the bottom of the leg.

Step 24:  Sew a Background (C) rectangle between two PAW UNITS. Sew this to the side of the unit made in the previous step.

Your pattern is wonderful! And it's such a temptation from the projects that have deadlines... so I'm using it as a leader/ender project. But that bear just wants to take over!
