It's the little baby bear paw... in blue!
Since September 3rd, I have been posting the instructions for the MOD Bear Paw quilt along. Although I did make the queen size version which I shared in this post, I wanted to make the baby size while participating in the quilt along. If you would like to quilt along, please check out the quilt along page here to see the schedule of instructions.
This size of quilt is perfect for basting right on my kitchen table. And for using a single piece for backing. For the quilting, I used a variegated thread from Superior Threads on top and chose a rich blue to match the backing in the bobbin. I quilted along the sashing strips from edge to edge and then quilted those wavy lines with my walking foot between.
All of these fabrics were found in my stash. And have been there for quite some time as they all came from way back when I would prewash all my fabrics before using them. I adore the little paw prints used for the blocks and binding. And the sashing fabric is a cute farm print. Some of my favourite pieces can be seen in the close ups below.
And this shot is just because I love the profile of that big bear ambling along....
Unlike the Lap and Queen size options which include a paw print border, the Baby and Crib size options finish without any border at all. To prevent the binding from covering the points at the edges of the quilt, after quilting I trimmed the batting and backing 1/8" larger than the top. Then I sewed the binding to the back of the quilt first by stitching from the front, catching the binding from beneath. Then I pressed the binding to the front and topstitched the binding to finish.
This quilt is perfect for a wee baby boy and is now listed in my Etsy shop!
In the spirit of creating transparency in this business, I want to share with you....
As of the end of August, I surpassed the $30.000 of income for the year. As of today, October 1st, I will have to begin charging Sales Tax. What does that mean for you? If you are an American or international fan of the Sew Fresh Quilts patterns or quilts, and you make a purchase from my Etsy shop.... Nothing will be any different.
However, if you are a Canadian.... The applicable taxes according to your residence will be automatically applied. But there is a silver lining... I have set up a special coupon code for my Canadian pals. Just email me for the details!
Keep On Quilting On!

First comment for October!! Love the blues, and the wavy lines and the binding, one wee boy will be so lucky to have this to snuggle up with.
Beautiful finish and congratulations on creating such a successful business, Lorna. That is fantastic. :)
I just love your blue 'sneaking' bear in your quilt - with all the bear paw blocks around. This is a favorite quilt pattern of mine. Beautiful quilt, Lorna!
The baby version is adorable and bound to be a "farm" favourite . Well done on your growing business
This is the coolest pattern. I love that bear! Congratulations on the success of your business. I am retired now, but the income you have mentioned is about what I made in the last year I worked. You are so lucky to be able to have a good income doing what you love, though I know you have worked hard for this accomplishment. Best wishes for you to double it next year.
xx, Carol
This is such a fun pattern for a baby quilt. Love the blue version!
Love this blue version of MOD Bear Paw. This will make one little boy very happy. Congrats on reaching that magic number. No sales tax here just good old GST. All the best in growing bigger.
So beautiful Lorna!
I can't wait to get sewing the big bear, but am forcing myself to get the bear paw blocks done first!
Congratulations on your success, Lorna! Here's wishing you continued success. The pattern is just fantastic. I love the way you've combined the bear and bear paw blocks. And it's perfect in blue. Beautiful quilt!
