Quilted Winter Mittens Table Runners

Happy Holidays are on the way! There's a nip in the air. Time to get your mittens out!

This Winter Mittens runner was a really quick make. Perfect way to cheer me up and get me in a Christmas mood. While I worked like a little elf in my quilting studio.

This fun little runner was made using a few selections from the new Sea Salt Sandy collection from Island Batik for the mittens. And an anonymous white tone on tone for the background.

For the backing, I found this fabulous print from the Doodles collection by Northcott Fabrics at Needles & Pins in downtown Listowel. I don't drop in there very often because her prices are quite steep. But I am so glad I did because this turned out to be The.Perfect.Print to compliment those beautiful batiks!

The same fabric was used for the binding along with a hint of purple for the flange. Although I used to make it quite often, it's been a while since I made this type of binding so I found it helpful to refer to my Flanged Binding Tutorial to refresh my memory.

I quilted this runner with my walking foot in organic wavy lines across the width, this time using plain white Guetermann polyester thread. And, for the first time ever, I used fusible fleece for the batting.

Winter Mittens runner by Sew Fresh Quilts

This project came together quickly and is a great pattern for using up some of your small scraps! Runner not long enough? Just add on another 13" for each set of additional mittens to the original 40" long. This includes the sashing strip between the blocks. So a runner with four sets of mittens would be 53" long.

And the pairs of mittens block would be a great addition to other cute projects. Great for gifts! Like mug rugs, placemats, or even cute little cushions for brightening up your sofa. A one pair block of mittens finishes at 12" wide by 10" tall.

"Winter Mittens" in Sea-Salt Sandy finished at approximately 12" x 40"
and was the 66th use of my 100 labels
ordered from Ikaprint.

This little runner was so much fun to make..... That I quickly made up another!

This time I used some Daysail by Bonnie & Camille for Moda  There's something to be said for that Aqua and Red! These little runners easily say "Winter" without screaming "Christmas!" and can be used for the entire season.

That backing.... Mmmmm....
So pretty, I'd be tempted to have it facing up!

"Winter Mittens" in Daysail also finished at approximately 12" x 40"
and was the 67th use of my 100 labels
ordered from Ikaprint.

Looking for a quick Christmas gift idea....

Let's Bee Social #100

First up.....
I want to thank you all for making the Let's Bee Social a success! This is the 100th post for the weekly linky party. Where the focus is on being social. This linky party relies on your linking up each week, but also on your willingness to visit the other participants. So often I hear from people who have met new friends and how much they enjoy the inspiration found at this party. It makes me so happy to know that you enjoy the linky party and are able to connect with one another. It's comforting to know that in a world filled with so much negative stuff (war, terrorism, racism, etc,) quilting binds us together and builds us up in love and friendship! Thank you for BEEing my friend and for making this party so much fun!

On that note, I would like to share with you some good news. On December 1st, the newest issue of Quiltmaker magazine hits the newsstands...

I am a center fold! Well, at least my giraffe quilt is.....

Here is a pixelated peek! They have changed the name of it from Giraffe Family to Family of Three. But it is the same one I mentioned in this post back when I finished the quilt. I received two issues in the mail this past Friday. And just may be tempted to let one of them go in a giveaway! So stay tuned!

But I DO want to make it clear. In spite of wanting to share the news of being published for the first time in a quilting magazine, I am not trying to be a show off. Or a braggart. Being a center fold is a far cry from being a cover girl. Remember this post about Miley and me?

That post and all my feelings outlined within it, are still as true today as they were when I wrote it. Being published doesn't necessarily mean much of anything as far as I'm concerned. Really. Just ask me.

****Edited to Add****

It's not that I don't appreciate being published. I do. It's just that I don't want rely on what other people think about my work. So many people are agonizing over whether their work is good enough to be published, to be accepted into Quilt Con, to be considered Modern, etc..... And I don't want to lose my perspective. I like what I make. I like what other people make. But I don't want to change my style to suit what other people feel is good or right or Modern. And I don't want people to think that because I got published that I think I am better than them or that my work is better than their work.

Thank you to all who stopped by and left a sweet comment on my Santa's Reindeer block post from last week. Rudolph is so happy, he ordered some snow straight from the North Pole!!! And congratulations to the following winners! Each have won a copy of Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Volume 12 - one from Quiltmaker and the other four from me. Pop on over and congratulate them!

Forest Friends pattern release

Introducing Sew Fresh Quilts new pattern – Forest Friends! I am so excited to have completed both the Twin and Baby size versions of the Forest Friends pattern in time for a Friday finish! First and foremost, I want to thank those of you who have been eagerly awaiting the release of this pattern. All your encouraging comments here on the blog as I have shown the progress of the blocks as they were being made and over on Instagram and Facebook. THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!!!! The response has been overwhelming!

Thank you also to Michael Miller Fabrics!!! These Forest Friends quilt projects have been generously sponsored by Michael Miller Fabrics. The quilt tops are made entirely from Michael Miller's signature collection Cotton Couture solids. And the backing is Aviary in aqua.

Aviary in Aqua by Michael Miller Fabrics

I loved working with the cotton couture and could not get over how soft those cottons are! And the Aviary backing? Gorgeous! Loved how well it blended in with the choices from the front and added a beautiful brightness to contrast with the woodsy feel of the front of the quilt. I am just so happy with these finishes!

Deer Hoof Prints and Bear blocks

Forest Friends is a sampler style design with a woodland theme and features animal quilt blocks made using traditional piecing methods. No templates. No paper piecing. Only simple straight line sewing and diagonal seams. Easy to follow instructions are provided for every step of the way! The Forest Friends pattern includes material requirements lists for both the TWIN and BABY size settings and charts for each quilt block, to make either a single block or a set of four blocks at once.

Fox #1 and Bear Paw Prints blocks

The Forest Friends quilt pattern consists of the following sized quilt blocks. The American Eagle, Canadian Beaver and the Love Birds blocks all finish at 8” x 13”. The Deer, Bear, Squirrel and both Fox blocks each finish at 8” x 8”. The Deer Hoof Prints, Bear Paws Prints and Canoe Paddle blocks all finish at 4” wide. This allows for a variety of settings in which your blocks can be used to make cushions, place mats, table runners, wall hangings or quilts from baby to big. Adding wider sashing and borders will also help you to adjust this pattern up to the size you desire.

Deer Hoof Prints and Fox #2 blocks

Love Birds block

The Forest Friends pattern gives instructions for making all of the individual quilt blocks and provides additional information for the sashing and borders to make the above settings in BABY or TWIN size. But it is up to you to choose whether to use the layouts shown previously or to design your own setting to suit your particular application. Here are some other examples of how these blocks can be used. Don't be surprised if a quilted version of them are shown here on the blog in the coming month. Christmas is a comin'!
