MOD Bear Paw QAL - Constructing the Bear Paw Blocks

Today's post is to provide the instructions for constructing the Bear Paw blocks.

I have decided to make a BABY quilt size.

As noted in Step 5, I will need to make 22 full Bear Paw blocks.

STOP: Stitch, Trim, Open & Press. The STOP method is the mainstay for the making of the blocks found in this pattern. To perform the STOP method, align a square (A) or rectangle (K) on the corner of the unit (Y) with right sides facing together. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner and sew along this diagonal line. Trim a ¼” seam. Finger press the seams open and then press with a hot iron. Press the seams open to reduce bulk.

Using the pieces cut for the BEAR PAW Blocks:

Step 1: Please note that the fabric squares should be sandwiched with right sides facing together, and line up on all sides as accurately as possible. The diagram does not show this accuracy for demonstrative purposes. Draw a diagonal line across the wrong side of the Background (B) square. This is your guide line. Place the Background (B) square on the Light Brown (B) square and sew a ¼” seam on EACH SIDE the blue line from edge to edge, as shown in red. Cut along the blue guide line. Press the seams open and trim each of the resulting Half Square Triangles (HST) to 1.5”.

Step 2:  Sew these HST units together in pairs. Note that half the HST pairs will be sewn together in one direction and the other half will be sewn together in the opposite direction. Add the Background (A) square to the top set. Add the Light Brown (D) square to the bottom set. Sew the sets together to complete the PAW UNITS. Block will be 3.5” square including seam allowances and will finish at 3” square.

  • Make 96 PAW UNITS for the BABY 39” x 47”
  • Make 120 PAW UNITS for the CRIB 47” x 47”
  • Make 120 PAW UNITS for the LAP 68” x 68”
  • Make 232 PAW UNITS for the FULL 84” x 84”

YOU WILL HAVE PARTS LEFT OVER: 8 (BB) HST’s and 5 (D) squares

Step 3:  Sew the PAW UNITS to the sides of the Background (C) rectangles.
  •          Make 44 PAW PAIRS for the BABY 39” x 47”
  •          Make 56 PAW PAIRS for the CRIB 47” x 47”
  •          Make 56 PAW PAIRS for the LAP 68” x 68”
  •          Make 112 PAW PAIRS for the FULL 84” x 84”

YOU WILL HAVE PARTS LEFT OVER: 8 (BB) HST’s, 14 Background (C) rectangles, 5 Light Brown (D) squares, 8 complete PAW UNITS

Step 4:  To make the CROSS SASHING, sew the Dark Brown (A) 1.5 " x WOF strips between the Background (C) 3.5 " x WOF  strips. Cut into 1.5” wide units.

  •          Make 23 CROSS SASHING for the BABY 39” x 47”
  •          Make 29 CROSS SASHING for the CRIB 47” x 47”
  •          Make 29 CROSS SASHING for the LAP 68” x 68”
  •          Make 56 CROSS SASHING for the FULL 84” x 84”

The FULL setting also requires one more CROSS SASHING UNIT. Use 2 Background (C) rectangles, and 1 Dark Brown (A) square from BIG BEAR Blocks cutting, to make one more CROSS SASHING UNIT.

Step 5:  Sew the CROSS SASHING units between the PAW PAIR sets.

  •          Make 22 FULL BLOCKS for the BABY 39” x 47”
  •          Make 28 FULL BLOCKS for the CRIB 47” x 47”
  •          Make 28 FULL BLOCKS for the LAP 68” x 68”
  •          Make 56 FULL BLOCKS for the FULL 84” x 84”

Block will be 7.5” square including seam allowances and will finish at 7” square.

YOU WILL HAVE PARTS LEFT OVER for use in the following Steps 6 to 24:   8 (BB) HST’s, 12 Background (C) rectangles, 5 Light Brown (D) squares, 8 complete PAW UNITS, and 1 CROSS SASHING UNIT

I'm excited to get this step started and reading these instructions, I feel pretty confident that I know what I'm doing with my crazy color changes now. All those bear paws are made in this step even for the bear blocks. Breathing a sigh of relief.

Strange, I'm signed up thru email (I re-submitted, and it told me I was already signed up) but, I never got this post. I had to come search for it. Oh well.
