Sunday Stash from Hawthorne Threads

Happy mail is always the most welcome of any delivery.  But this one was special.  It was my first time ordering from Hawthorne Threads.  And this precious package arrived at the perfect time.  On the day of Christmas Eve.

http://www.hawthornethreads.com

Most of these pieces were chosen in 6 yard cuts and purchased for backing fabric.  Perfect for a sweet baby girl quilt, first up is 6 yards of Slipper Roses in White from the Slipper Roses collection by Tanya Whelan for Westminster Fabrics/Free Spirit.  And I could not resist these Elephants in Grey by Ed Emberley from the Happy Drawing collection for Cloud 9 Fabrics.  Modern and fun, this Skullan in Berry Fuschia by Lotta Jansdotter from the Follie collection for Windham Fabrics, has a graphic, stamped feel to the print.

The appearance of these random flowers, birds and animals among the elephants adds an element of fun and a punch of colour.  Brilliant!

Another 6 yard cut purchased for backing fabric is this Windy Day in Aqua from the Backyard Baby collection by Patty Sloniger for Michael Miller Fabrics.  The additional 1 yard cuts of Ant Maze in Gray and Birch Forest in Aqua are from this same collection.  Missing from my stash was an actual black and white stripe for binding.  This 4 yard cut of Clown Stripe in White was also from Michael Miller Fabrics.

The use of the teal wavy lines in the background is pleasing to the eye.  And, similarly, the appearance of these green leaves and orange ants which were added to the mix to provide a spark of colour.  Such clever little design elements!

The repeating pattern of trees and swings are broken up with the scarf clad birds in orange and blue, smiling citrus fruits, egg laden nests and climbing worms.  But the sweetest of all is that lonely pup in his green striped sweater.  Sitting and waiting for company.

I don't normally purchase fabric from out of the country because of the additional charges.  This fabric acquisition was the maximum 30 Yards that will fit in a USPS Priority (Flat Rate Medium Box)  for $32.95 USD.  And an additional $53.34 CAD was paid for Customs.  But....  It was completely worth it!

Looking forward to showing these fabrics in action during the coming months!

Keep On Quilting On!

I think I must have the laziest postal staff going over here because I pretty much never get charged any duty/taxes on things I've bought from the US. I haven't bought anything in a while, but I more or less figured out that as long as the value on the package was less than $80-85, they never charged for it.
$53 seems like a lot, anyway!

Congrats!! I love Hawthorne threads, they have a great loyality program...and sadly (or not) I have hit that 400 yard mark :-). I have that black stripey fabric and just used it as binding - and loved it!!

Wow, I had no idea about the customs charge that you have to pay. That is... a lot. I really like Hawthorne Threads, and you definitely picked up some really cute and lovely fabrics. :)

Customs can be a killer that's true! But I found out that I normally never get charged when I order from the Fat Quarter Shop because they always state the value at 20€ no matter what's in it. Might be ethically not so right but on the other side I always think it can't be my nation's business what and where I buy something for me!

Very cute fabrics! I love the elephant prints

What fun prints. I can't believe those custom charges but then I looked at how much yardage you said you picked up and while it's still high it's less jarring in perspective! I'm used to fabric orders that are usually the same price range as your customs feed alone :)

Hi Lorna! These are all really beautiful! I love that windy day! I have still some scraps from Birch Forest and it has been my favourite fabric. x Teje
