Your one and only source into the scandalous lives of the Let's Bee Social elite.
Last week I shared with you, the troubles of being kept in a box for a full year. This UFO got some serious attention since it's rediscovery. I pieced the triangles into half hexagons. And then laid them out according to the design plan.
But they did not amount to much. And she just wasn't doing it for me. Too clicky. Too crowded. Too symmetrical. Just too much. This layout would have been about 25" x 50".
So I thought about adding some negative space to the mix and spreading out those "asterisk like" hexagon blocks. I cut out a whole lot of plain white Kona Snow triangles and also sewed them into half hexagon shapes.
Then back to the old design wall I went.
Much better, I think I like it. This layout is approximately 40" x 50" now. But there's more.....
I mentioned the off cuts from making those asterisk triangles from the strip sets. And had thought they looked really cool in the triangle setting as seen below right. But this requires sewing them together with a Y seam. And then having to deal with more triangles.
So I laid them out in rows instead, as seen at the top of the photo below, and intend to use them as some kind of border. And then there are some pieces left from the strips sets that I want to use up.
Improv and borders aren't usually my thing.... We shall see!

Love love love the changes to the astricks! Airy & modern! I just love triangle quilts!
I love what you did with that negative space and your playing with the left overs. I am curious to see the finished quilt.
You are right, your second layout looks much, much better and I like what you are thinking of with the 'leftovers' too: go for it!
I love everything about this quilt, your layout with all that white is perfect! And I absolutely love that border, I look forward to seeing more :)
I like the second layout much better, and the rest, that will add a stunning border.
I like it with the white space better as well :)
I agree the new layout is much better. The border idea is going to be striking.
Great design decisions. The results are striking.
I LOVE this!!! And, totally love the improve border idea!!!!
Thank you for your blog . . . I really enjoy reading it!
oh this is a wonderful layout. It reminds me of all the great times I had playing Jacks with family and friends
your doing a great job. cant wait to see the finished quilt
I love the layout you used, it's like a bright and fun snowfall. The border looks like it would be perfect although I'm not much of border person either.
I much prefer the quilt with the negative space in between, it just looks more blanced and less crowded. Right now as I am building my quilting skills, I tend to shy away from projects with lots negative spaces. I guess I just need to build up my quilting confidence to tackle it one of these days
Can't wait to see the improv border!
I really do love the layout with the negative space, Lorna! And I can't wait to see what you have going on with that border.

I really like your little "asterisks"...and agree the layout with the negative space clarifies the design...very fun!
I love the new design. SEW much better!!!! And I'm seeing borders with those left over pieces. Can't wait to see what you do.
Lorna I love your ideas.
I am always inspired!!
Yes, yes, yes!! I love the new layout! The space in between the 'asterisks' is amazing, great idea, perfect...well done!
Freat posibilities Lorna! Love your layout and can't wait to see what you finish with.
I love the more spaced out blocks with the negative space, tons of great space for some quilting.
Adding the negative space to the blocks really lets them breathe. I am also a huge fan of the offcut blocks at the top of the image; good luck "playing" more (I find calling it play instead of improv makes it feel much less scary). :)
I love your new layout - so much more interesting.
Your improv and border concept looks great - can't wait to see where you go with it.
I love what you are doing!! The negative space makes more work but add so much to the overall project!! Is there a pattern for this?
Adding the extra white has totally changed the top. I love seeing what other people are doing and how they lay out their quilts - so much inspiration!! Looking forward to seeing it coming together.
Love your happy accident design! Congrats at going outside of the hexagon!
Yep, you got it on the second layout! It looks great!
I like where you're going with your "asterisks!" :)
Love the change you made in this quilt. What a great way to use the cut offs.
I like your improve.
I'm liking the border possibility...and the negative space is perfect.
I love the new layout. It works so much better than the first.
Wow love what you came up with so far!!
Hi Lorna! I love the negative space added in! looks great! xo jan
Love it!! Adding the negative space was an awesome decision. Wow.
Very impressive asterisk quilt!! Lots of negative space. Can't wait to see what you do next!
The asterisks are beautiful, and do look better with the extra space. I really like your improv blocks too. Improv and modern. You go girl!
I'm liking the new layout. And I bet that improv and borders will soon be your thing because what you have pictured w/those cut-offs is looking pretty darn special. Thanks for the linky.
Your quilt is looking great! I love playing with bits of scraps and turning them into borders. I really like the direction you are going!
Nice! I think those leftovers are going to make a really pretty border!
Fun play with the off cuts. The unique triangle shapes are terrific, but if you don't want to do the Y-seams, love the border they make.
