Elephant Parade - Week 6 - Flowers

Welcome to week 6 of the Elephant Parade!  I will be showing a block each week and would like to encourage you to quilt along.  You can try out as many or as few blocks as you like.  Make a quilt or make a mini.  Make a cushion.  Make whatever your imagination leads you to make!

The original post about the inspiration for this baby quilt design can be found here.  I have also added a Elephant Parade quilt along page that includes all the information you will need and a weekly schedule.  As each post is published the live links will be added to the schedule.  The Elephant Parade page tab is found just below the blog header.

Happily, Northcott Fabrics is as excited to see this come to life as I am, and will be sponsoring this project.  Follow along and watch as these bright solids from their ColorWorks Premium Solids quilting cottons collection become shaped into these adorable animals!

It is not necessary to purchase the pattern in order to participate.  But if you are wanting to make the complete quilt, as pictured above, and would prefer the convenience of using a printable pdf pattern,  Elephant Parade is available for purchase and includes complete cutting instructions and a detailed guide to finishing the entire quilt.  The pattern is available in my pattern store here.

Press all seams open and press seams as you go.

For the red and blue flower blocks, as pictured below, you will need:

Snow 9000-10 (off white)
12 @  2.25" squares, 3 @ 1.5” x 4.5” rectangle, 4 @ 1” x 3.5” rectangles and 8 @ 1.5" squares

Cardinal 9000-241 (red)
2 @ 1.5” x 3.5” rectangles and 2 @ 1.5” squares

Turquoise 9000-62 (blue)
4 @ 1.5” x 3.5” rectangles and 4 @ 1.5” squares

Slate 9000-93 (dark grey)
3 @ 1.5” square

Kelly 9000-72 (dark green)
6 @ 2.25” x 4.5” rectangles

Lime 9000-71 (light green)
3 @ 1” x 4.5" rectangle

Press all seams open and press seams as you go.

Step 1:  Take the 1.5" x 4.5” white rectangle, 1” x 3.5” white rectangles, 1.5” x 3.5” red rectangles, and 1.5" red, dark grey and white squares.  Sew the red squares on the sides of the dark grey square.  Press the seams open.  Draw a diagonal line across the 1.5" white squares.  Place them on the ends of the 1.5” x 3.5” red rectangles and sew along the diagonal lines, as shown in red.  Trim a 1/4" seam.  Press the seams open.  Place the pieces in order as shown and sew them together.  Press the seams open.  Add the 1” x 3.5” white rectangles to the sides and press the seams open.  Sew the 1.5” x 4.5” white rectangle on top and press the seam open.

Step 2:  Take the 2.25” white squares, the 2.25” x 4.5" dark green rectangles.  Draw a diagonal line across the 2.25" white squares.  Place the white squares on the top and bottom of the green rectangles and sew along the diagonal lines, as shown in red.  Trim a 1/4" seam.  Press the seams open.  Take the 1” x 4.5” light green rectangle and sew it between the leaf units, as shown.  Take the unit from Step 1 and sew it on top of this leaf and stem unit.  Press the seam open.

Follow the above steps, replacing the red pieces with the blue pieces to make the two blue flower blocks.

Completed blocks will each measure 8.5" tall by 4.5" wide including seam allowances

Thank you. I love those flowers, and will make them right away, although I haven't done the birds.

Love the flowers. I'm on the home stretch of my Bonnie Hunter's mystery quilt, so hope to make more elephant and these lovely flowers. Keep smiling - spring is on the way!

Lorna, there is a wrong size on the upper white strip in the red flower. I cut the pieces from the measures above the flower, and found that it should be 1,5", as it's said under the flower. Easy to be fixed, so that's ok.

Do you have a tutorial for the other blue flower in your elephant tag? The one that looks like a tulip? I’m enjoying the process of following your very clear instructions.
