Stepping Stones quilt in Positive setting |
Stepping Stones quilt in Negative setting |
These twin quilt tops are for the Island Batik - Sock Hop Blog Hop. The hop runs from January 12 to 25, And the full schedule can be found on my right sidebar.
Each participant will be featuring their choice of Island Batik's new fabric collections in a Classic Block.
My choice was the Stepping Stones quilt block.
Tutorial post planned for later this month!
Once I had settled on the Stepping Stones quilt block as my choice for a classic block, I used my EQ7 to design a quilt. Then I changed things up and made a negative setting too.
I asked my son Russell for his opinion. He favoured the one on the left in the positive setting. But I really liked the one on the right in the negative setting! It was just too hard to chose one over the other. So I worked out a plan, managing to make both quilts from the half yard cuts that were provided.
I got to use these gorgeous Island Batik fabrics from the new Cry Me A River collection.
Each quilt top finished at approximately 40" x 50"
And after writing that post for Monday on Quilting With Your Walking Foot for the Top 10 Tips for New Quilters series, I have been itching to finish piecing these tops so I can get quilting again!
I have chosen my backing. The binding has already been prepared and is ready to go. And am certainly looking forward to getting these two cuties quilted up for my Sock Hop Blog Hop post on January 25th.

These are great! I love the pair of them together. Individually, I think I prefer the positive... cause more color. :-)
Oh, they're going to be awesome. Great pattern. I think I'm a fan of the negative.... I'm always up for lots of white freshness. Good stuff Lorna. Jen
i am in love with both quilts! They are stunning
My SO said the one on the left, right as I was saying the one on the right. Just like you and your son! Fun to see it both ways.
They are beautiful! Love both and the colors!
I like them both but if I had to choose just one, it would be the negative setting! Very pretty!
I'm with you, it's hard to decide. Love all the color in the positive but I'm more of a traditional quilter and the negative gives that feel. Either choice is beautiful.
Good going Lorna. The negative one just has the edge for me, but they are both lovely.
Hard to choose between them but I'm leaning toward negative for some reason!
I really like the white background -
Beautiful quilt and great colors!
Love how you plan to use the batiks! The white background is my favorite as well! What a fun blog hop...I will be watching and checking it out!
OK I think you have outdone yourself!! Geesh I can't decide which I like better as I absolutely LOVE them both!! Looking forward to the tute on this block.
I can't decide--I love them both!!
Love them both, but if I only get one choice, it would be the positive quilt. Love how the stars pop against the white.
Beautiful! I have no idea which one I would choose. I think maybe it would be the first, because it is a little different with the darker backgrounds.
They look great, Lorna. It would be hard to choose which one to make, and I love that you made both! I think I might favor the "negative" one, but it is a really, really close call.
Two gorgeous quilts!
Both quilts are beautiful and eye catching. I have usually avoided heavily stamped batiks where you can see an object like the turtle. However, you have shown me that she used in patchwork, the pattern is not a distraction. Brilliant. The vibrant colors are so rich. I still like the negative with all that white. Well done!
They are both wonderful, but I would have to go with the negative. Against the white background, the stars just pop.
I love them both. Alone, I might pick the negative one. But really they belong together as a set. They enrich each other. Beautiful!
It's so beautiful and I loved to see it in the positive and the negative! My favorite is the darker background.
I love this! Especially since I have a self imposed positive/negative BOM made up for myself this year! I tend to like the negative, day in, day out :)
They both look like Seahawks quilts to me!
WOW!!! I love them both!!! Can't wait to see the tutorial :) May have to add this one to my "to do" list!

Everything Is Coming Up Rosie
I couldn't pick one over the other. They are both beautiful.
I like the positive design (on the left). It feels fresh and modern.
I'm with Russell on the positive. Gorgeous colours!
the positive one reminds me of Nordic sweaters... which is a good thing. The negative image is the one I would like to make, as it reminds me of an Irish chain and showcases the stars more. Clever you.
LeeAnna at not afraid of color
Loving these!!
I like them both--glad you have enough fabric!
I can't decide, I love them both!
Both are lovely. Positive setting looks classic and the negative looks modern.I like the negative setting more. Love the fabrics!
Choosing is almost impossible...but...I think I like the one on the right. Either way, they are soooo beautiful!
it is hard to choose but I'm going with the one on the right ! Looking forward to the tutorial. Colleen at piecemakerquilts.wordpress.com
Sure, make two! LOL! They are both beautiful so I can see your dilemma . Nicely solved! Can't wait to see how you'll quilt these, Lorna!
I love one on the right. Can't wait for tutorial:-)
Tough choice. The first one is more "me" but there is something to be said about the quietness of the second one.
Great to see both versions. I'm falling more for the negavite :) Well done!
Love the colors. My slight preference is for the one on the right. Just seems sharper and brighter. I would love to make this pattern but I am sure I would mess up at least one or two small pieces....
Wow and Wow....love them both.
Who can choose! The Positive one really shows off the fabric colors...just gorgeous! The Negative one just sings. Beautiful job! Can't wait to see how you finish them.
Positive, great colours & where do you get this pattern I would enjoy making one. Thks for the sock hop blog hop. Do you have to be a vender to buy from batik island? Happy Quilting :)
The Stepping Stones block tutorial is coming up soon! Yes, you do have to be a vender to buy from Island Batik directly, but their products can be found in quilt shops. On the Island Batik website, click on the tab at the top of the page labeled Where To Buy to find a store near you.
Beautiful quilts Lorna, I'm not sure which one I like the best!!
Wow - I **love** them both and could never choose. In fact, it's really tempting to do this as a two-sided quilt, matching the blocks up front to back and all. . . Hmm... find my brain considering the logistics of that. . .
You've done it again Lorna! Two more gorgeous quilts! You showcased the fabrics wonderfully too!
Sorry it took me a while to comment - Lorna, I LOVE these!!! Congrats on a great design!
Both are beautiful but the Negative one is Gorgeous
I think both are beautiful, but the negative one is my favourite!
I like the negative one too, but I can see why your son liked the other one, it is just as pretty.
I really like both of them, so hard to choose. Beautiful.
Thank you for putting an effort to published this article. You've done a great job! Good bless!
