The final TGIFF for 2014!
Whoo-hoo!
Today I am sharing my WoW-E! quilt finish.
It was a bit windy when I took this quilt out for photographing. So after my fingers got cold waiting for the breeze to settle, I tried out a new shoot location and hung this quilt on the well house door. Last week we were fresh out of snow when I photographed the custom quilt. But now we have a little sprinkling. Not a completely green Christmas!
I have to admit.... when I had the blocks completed.... and put them up on the design wall.... I had my doubts about the colour choices I had made. They looked great together as a pile of fat quarters. But to me, the blocks looked bland and boring.
The addition of the Silver sashing and Coal cornerstones changed everything. They brought all those colours into line and set each block apart so perfectly. Now I just love it!
When I shared in Tuesday's post that the top was finished, I had no idea what I was going to use for the backing. Of course my son Russell was called into the sewing room to give his opinion on the two pieces pulled for the audition. He always has the best advice. So honest and with the eye of an artist. He enthusiastically said he "really liked" this one. It is Novella Finnelopy in Aqua by Valori Wells for Free Spirit.
I did not want to go with something too plain. The blocks are made from some pretty subdued Kona cottons. Some of their names remind of summer: Melon, Punch, Lemon, Daffodil, Green Tea, Asparagus, Sunny, Mango, and Cypress. The Ice Frappe may be something to drink in summer, but the name makes me think of winter. As does the Snow, used for the background and the Silver used for the sashing. Coal was used in the block centers and for the binding. Hope none of you ended up with this in your stocking!!!! Unless it's Kona Coal of course!
When she was all ready for basting, she called out for the Serpentine stitch. I recently washed up a doll quilt made using this stitch and was so WoW'ed by the crinkly results, I knew this quilt needed it, too! I like how the curvy lines soften up the sharp angles of the blocks. And help to hide the slight imperfections in the piecing. *Wink*
These individual blocks finish at 9" square. And the quilt finished at approximately 41" x 51". Making a nice sized baby or lap quilt. But the WoW-E! pattern, has instructions for THREE DIFFERENT sizes. It is now available from my little Etsy shop here!

Hi Lorna! This is gorgeus quilt! Not boring colours at all. As you have the quilt in the First photo, I was thinking that perhaps these blocks would look great also 'in point'. I haven't made yet any quilt where the blocks are in point and would love to try that too. x Teje
This is a beautiful quilt! I love how you have taken blocks with sharp angles and straight lines, juxtaposed them with a backing with a softer curving design, and finished it off with the serpentine quilting. The placement for the one darker block is also perfect to balance the overall composition. Simply lovely!

Oh, wow!! Between the sashing/cornerstones and the serpentine machine quilting, this quilt is a true beauty!! It never fails to amaze me how the sashing can pull together a questionable assortment of blocks and make them absolutely gorgeous when sewn together. Have a wonderful holiday week.
Hi! I love this pattern and I think your decision to make all the centers the same is very striking. I also wanted to say how much I love your quilting on it. I can say now that I am a big fan of the Serpentine stitch. I have never seen it before. This is the first time I've ever commented on the quilting because usually it's just not that important to me so I don't notice it. But this one is a really neat pattern and stands out! Well done, a team effort and a great finish. I often call my family in for approval of colour choices, whether or not I agree with said choices is another matter entirely ...hahahaha. This is a cute quilt and I love how you have shown and discussed it's progression, nice to know these things don't just plop on the landscape all perfect all at once! Hi Lorna, I like the way the grey softens the white. Did you do the quilting with a large serpentine stitch on your sewing machine, or did you mange to FMQ the lines so evenly? Nice visual impact no matter how you did it. PS I see that a previous commenter was also curious about this aspect.
