Fox & Friends {redo} Friday Finish

Welcome to TGIFF!  I am so happy to be your hostess this week.  And look forward to seeing all your fabulous finishes!

In preparation for the new teaching position at my LQS, my finish for this week is a redo of my Fox & Friends triangle quilt.  As this is my all time best selling pattern, I am hoping there will be a lot of interest generated in this being offered as a class project.

This version of Fox & Friends is a little different from the original, which you can see here.  Mainly because of the backing and the quilting.  But I also used different blue fat quarters for the background.  I certainly do love working with those Kona cotton solids!

This was my first time quilting with a minky backing.  Wanting to keep it simple, I opted for organic wavy line quilting from edge to edge.  Not wishing to quilt across the appliqued eyes, a few of those waves were quite exaggerated.  But seem to add to the authenticity of raccoons being known as bandits!

This quilt finished at approximately 39" x 45".  And is finish "Lucky 13" in my countdown of my 100 labels ordered from MyOwnQuiltLabels.

Don't you just love those brightly coloured, big eyed owls?  When I seen this cute minky print at my LQS, I could not resist.  I just knew it would be perfect for a redo of the Fox & Friends pattern.  And adds a wonderfully cozy weight to the quilt.

How was my first experience quilting with minky?

Basting:  I did not use my quilt frame to baste this quilt, as minky is very stretchy.  This time I basted on my kitchen table.  And I used a TON of pins.  Basted with a pin in every triangle.

Quilting:  Using a smaller needle is better for preventing the minky from following the needle back up to the front of your quilt and poking through the holes.  Using the walking foot, I kept the quilting simple and used a stitch length of 3.0

Check the Back:  Had to rip out four lines of quilting on the bottom row after putting in a fresh bobbin. The backing was no longer pinned and I failed to ensure the backing was smoothed out again.  My fault... not the minky's!

You can find the Fox & Friends pattern in my pattern shop here.

Now it's your turn!  Please share a link to your fabulous finishes... And let's party!

I love raccoons. We see them all the time here in Georgia(USA). Makes me think of Where the Red Fern Grows which makes me think of my whole sixth grade class crying like babies, including our gruff male teacher. Then I move on to reading it with my boys for home school and crying for days with them. They were in 3rd and 5th grade at the time. Now one has graduated college! Those are good memories. I need to make that adorable quilt.

Your quilting added just the right touch to the raccoon's eyes. It's a lovely piece. Thanks for the tips on using the minky backing.
