Black Birds in Blue {redo}

Before I realized that I would be manning a vendor booth at the International Plowing Match in Harriston in August, I had listed my Black Bird baby quilt in my Etsy shop. And it sold at the end of June.

Because the Black Bird pattern has been one of my more popular patterns, I wanted to have a sample to hang in the booth. So after finishing the piecing for the MOD Bear Paw quilt top, I started piecing a new Black Bird quilt. This one featuring a blue bird in place of the red bird in the original quilt. And using a light silver for the background.

As soon as I had finished the original quilt I immediately wanted to make one with a blue bird. So I really enjoyed making this quilt once more!

Unlike the great big MOD Bear Paw, with a quilt this size, I can easily baste right at home on my kitchen table. Except for the backing, this quilt was made entirely from selections from Northcott Fabrics

The quilting took no time at all. I used a Light Grey Omni from Superior Threads. Both on top and in the bobbin.

Each bird block finishes at 6" square after applying the sashing strips.

I've had this backing fabric in my stash for a long, long time. And am so pleased with how well it blends with the fabrics from the top and the binding. It is Minimalista by AGF Studio.

This quilt will be featured in my booth at the upcoming International Plowing Match in Harriston, Ontario this August 19 and 20th. If you're free, please make plans to come and drop by, if you can. I would love to meet some bloggy friends!

The "Black Birds" baby quilt finished at 40" x 46"
and was the 6th use of my 2nd edition of 100 labels
ordered from Ikaprint.

Lovely with the one blue bird singing away, very apt for the venue. I have seen fields ploughed and as the farmer goes up each row, the birds flock to the newly turned soil for worms and grubs. I googled the place, this is huge, with 1000 acres, as I compared it to the farm of 100 acres where I grew up as a child. I'm sure you will have a wonderful time.

How fantastic that the first version sold so quickly and that you will now have this one in your upcoming booth! It's lovely and I hope you have a great time!

Oh, I love it! If it didn't take me three tries to get the bird block right on Elephant Parade, and two on Zany Zebras, I would entertain thoughts of making it! I'm a bird brain!

I didn't realize you had sold the red bird version either. You stitched this one up super quick and it is just as cute as the first one. It will look great hanging in your booth. Do you find after you have made one for a second time, it stitches up quicker?

Those birds have personality! You could call this one the "bluebird of Happiness!"

Love this pattern, but I am intrigued, Lorna -- a quilt booth at a plowing match? Is there a craft fair side component? Obviously, I'm a city girl but I know about tractor pulls and they are no environment for quilts.

I love it with the blue. The blue binding is great.

May I ask what is you go to machine? I am in the process of getting a new machine and am getting overwhelmed with information.

This is a must make quilt for me. Love, love the birds - with red or blue. It is the birds I miss the most when winter sets in. Maybe having this quilt around would help :)! Love the fabrics you used in your quilt - backing and quilting!!

I must say this bird quilt is one of my favorites. I am thinking of possibly making one with scrappy birds and make sure their beaks stand out in the perfect color - of course I must order my pattern from you first LOL

Really cute. You are very talented. Your wavy lines quilting always remind me of wind storms.

Beautiful and FUN! I love your fabrics... they have that feather texture to them!
It's cute to see the unexpected blue bird, too, in the flock.
This quilt will be a fan favorite at your showing in August.

This is such a great pattern, and I can see why it would instantly become a favorite. The addition of the blue bird is perfect for this quilt.

I love this quilt, the little blue bird amongst the black birds, just wonderful! Is your pattern suitable for a beginner at patchwork? I haven't done much piecing yet but I would love to have a go at a blackbird block. Thanks.
