All Aboard the Polar Express!

Choo-choo! Ready to GO!? Now offering a scenic tour of the North Pole courtesy of the Polar Express!

Today I am sharing my third AccuQuilt guest blog post, featuring my "Polar Express" easy applique design. This fun project utilizes the GO! Train die and can be used a wall hanging or as a super cute table runner. Perfect for a topper on a little one's dresser!

This little runner was super fun to make. You'll find that this GO! Train die is the perfect size for using your charm squares. Or using up some of your small scraps!

All the fabrics used in this project were found in my stash. I placed my white tone on tone for the hills of snow right on top of my Clouds from the Up, Up & Away collection for Northcott Fabrics. Both with right sides facing up. And then used my rotary cutter to free hand cut those gently rolling hills. Then I marked both of the raw edges every two inches or so to keep them lined up and sewed the seam with right sides together, using a few pins. And pressed the seam open.

I backed all my fabrics with paper backed fusible web before running them through my AccuQuilt cutter. And even did so with some extra of the snow fabric to place them on the train cars, too!

I also added some accent stripes for each car to coordinate with the others.

Then I quilted this runner with my walking foot in parallel lines with a gentle curve to match those rolling hills, using plain white Guetermann polyester thread on top and in the bobbin. All the while my sewing machine was calling out, "Chugga-chugga. Chugga-chugga." Just like a real train rolling down the tracks!

For the backing I chose my all time favourite Christmas print. Holiday Sparkle by Nina Seven for Wilmington Prints. I love this fabric - the dark gray background, the colourful text phrases, and the circular dots that remind me of snow flakes!

Truthfully, all the train car fabrics were chosen to coordinate with this great backing print.

"Polar Express" finished at approximately 13" x 40"
and was the 56th use of my 100 labels
ordered from Ikaprint.

Lorna, that is adorable! I used machine embroidery to make a tree skirt with a train running around it, your train would be so cute for that.
