MQG Fabric Challenge

On Wednesday I mentioned I was working on my design for the Michael Miller fabric challenge going on at the MQG.  We are working with the new Petal Pinwheels collection.

Every participant in the challenge has been sent one fat eighth of these five prints and one solid.  Now a fat eighth isn't much, but it is enough to make you fall in love...



At first I was stumped.

I was thinking of making a quilted tote bag.  I am just not a bag lady.

Luckily,  I happened upon some Michael Miller solids in the LQS while visiting my parents.  There was no plan yet, so I purchased a half yard of these four solids and a whole yard of the Chevy Chevron print.  I thought the chevron would look great for the largest section of the backing.





The chevron print inspired me to go with a chevron theme.  And from there it morphed in my mind and the chevron was formed using equilateral triangles.  I began designing on a grid paper, but quickly moved to using EQ7.  Please disregard that one blank triangle in every diagram.  My EQ7 has a hiccup!

First

Being as there are only so many triangles you can get out of a fat eighth, my first design concentrated the challenge prints in a single scrappy chevron running through the middle.  But this did not appeal to me.  The orange (Coral) solid triangles stand out too much.  And I think this palette using the pink makes it look too much like an Easter egg.  Not that I have anything against Easter eggs.... But....

Second

So I took out the pink and instead used the Graphite.  This second design really appealed to me,  but I did not have enough of that dark grey solid to work with.  So I modified the design.

Third

Knowing how many triangles I could get from each of the fat eighths and from each of the half yard cuts, I formulated this third design.  And was very pleased with it.

But in the cutting and arranging on the design wall process I messed up one of the triangle pieces, so I had to ditch the bottom row.  Painful though it was...

I began cutting and piecing the top on Wednesday afternoon and had all the pieces paired up by quitting time.  Thursday enabled me to complete the top, do some gardening, get the dishes done AND make dinner.   That Coral pyramid certainly does demand attention and inspired the name Quilt Like an Egyptian.  This top is my Friday finish!

Now I am wondering if I even want to use the Chevy Chevron for the backing at all.  I don't want the pink.  I would like to use the Graphite for binding, but haven't any left.  I may just be making another visit to my parents and stopping back in at that LQS on Saturday!
