Modern Charm for Spring Quilt Festival 2014

AmysCreativeSide.comYes!  It's time to celebrate!

The Blogger's Quilt Festival at Amy's Creative Side has begun!  Please do make time to visit the festival throughout the coming weeks.  There are always so many inspiring entries.  Beautiful quilts.  Wonderful quilting.  And gorgeous photos!

Have your say and vote for your favourite quilts!

My second entry this year is in the Home Machine Quilted category.  You can see my first entry here.

Modern Charm takes a charm pack of your favourite line....
And shows it off in this minimalist design.

The finished quilt top waited patiently for some happy mail.  When it arrived...

I layered my quilt backing, batting and top in a pin basting session that afternoon.

Four new cones of Magnifico by Superior Threads.
Pink Pink Pink #2008, Aruba #2142, Passionate Purple #2124 and Electric Green #2101.

Then Aunt Elna and I spent the weekend working away on the quilting.

And after three days of intense quilting, I was finally able to apply the binding.

I have long been admiring examples of the Spiral Quilting as shown on blogs such as Amanda Jean's Crazy Mom Quilts and Svetlana of S.O.T.A.K Handmade.

A close up of a spiral.

With the larger throat space of my Aunt Elna, I was finally able to try my hand at spiral quilting, and added a little interest with echo quilting thrown into the mix.

Close up of the spiral.

I was afraid that those bright Magnifico threads were going to be too much.  That they would detract from the design.  And that each little mistake would be so much more obvious.

But they blend in well.
And it isn't until you see the back of the quilt that you can even appreciate all those hours.

Quilt Stats:
Size:  Quilt finishes at 62" x 67"
Title:  Modern Charm
Designed: by me, Lorna McMahon
Pieced and Quilted: on my own home sewing machine, Aunt Elna

Quilting:  Spiral and Echo quilting in a 3.5 stitch length using Magnifico by Superior Threads.

Enjoy the Quilt Festival and...

Oh my gosh, Lorna! I've been staring at your quilting on this and trying to figure out how you planned out all the echo quilting in between the spirals. It's absolutely amazing and the quilt is gorgeous!!

This is looking awesome! Some of my favorite prints are in there ;).
Magnifico has been my latest thread crush as well. Haven't quilted an entire quilt with it though.
Your quilting is just amazing!

I've been trying to figure out how you planned the quilting. Did you draw it out beforehand? Did you plan where you were putting the spirals, then add the echoes?
It is one beautiful quilt!

Holy cow; this is amazing! I am literally in awe of that quilting! I love the different colors and that you mixed the spirals and echoes. Just gorgeous! I also love that you named your machine Aunt Elna. That's so cute. I have named mine Princess Pfiona (I have a Pfaff). :)

what a great quilt, fabrics all work so well and love the background one you have used, really shows the other colours so well and as for the quilting I am amazed, you have done a wonderful job, with a little help of course from Aunt Elna.

I really love this quilt. The minimalism of the front is perfect to show off prints and I'm already wishing I'd made a quilt like this with my charm pack of Bluebird Park... The quilting is beautiful, I love the spiral and the echo and the use of different colours.

Great quilting design!

This quilt is simply another example of your eye for colour. I looooove it. You did take a chance quilting it with coloured threads but you should know, by now, that your instincts are good. The quilting is phenomenal.
