But today I opened a box that had been stuck way up on the very top of the top shelf. Inside was a lonely little work in progress, that had not had much progress made on it at all. I think it was not turning out like the grand dream I had envisioned. So it was relegated to "up there".
I did a search of my blog archive to see just how long that box had been "up there". Turns out it was one year ago during Let's Bee Social #37, that I had mentioned I was watching the Gossip Girl series on DVD with my daughter. Two weeks later during the Let's Bee Social #39, I talked about my fascination with a set of chair cushions from the set of Gossip Girl.
During my move last week, when I brought everything from "up there, over there and under there" into my newly painted sewing space, I discovered just what was in that box. Today I opened my box containing my only UFO. And there it was....
Pieces of this Gossip Girl inspired unfinished project. Strips and bits. I do love the fabrics. These are strips of Kona Snow and what remains of my Riley Blake Basic Shades that I purchased from Mad About Patchwork back in February 2014. I had originally planned to paper piece this baby. But you all know I'm not a paper piecer. So I came up with a different plan. And drew up a colouring page to go with.
Triangles I can do.
Even the off cuts are too pretty to go to waste. Or back into a box. They will be incorporated. Somehow.
Making progress on this lonely UFO today!

Hi Lorna! Your ufo looks exciting. Show us soon more! x Teje
ReplyDeleteLovely and fresh with those colours and white, will we have to wait and see what is next to be made with these?
ReplyDeleteI love what you have rediscovered up on your shelf - it's going to be lovely! When I started quilting I went to club and all these ladies were talking about UFOs - I was astounded by the number that they had. I vowed I would never do that but unlike you I didn't stick to that ....... I am trying hard this year to clear but such lovely new projects keep calling me!!!
ReplyDeleteOnly one UFO! You have willpower. It looks beautiful, can't wait to see the finished project.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great way to make those blocks Lorna! Can't wait to see it finished.
ReplyDeleteSo that's your secret to productivity! One project at a time. I was just emailing w/a fellow quilter/blogger about that same thing as I'd read in her blog...that she's a one-project-at-a-time quilter and super productive too. I haven't been a one-project-at-a-time quilter since my very 1st quilt in Aug 2011. Once I get caught up on my current UFOs I'm definitely going to give it a go. Your WIP is a pretty one. Looking forward to seeing it finished. Thanks for the linky party!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you found that box - the Fabric colors are so beautiful! Now to the finish line :)!
ReplyDeleteI like to have a 'few' projects on the go at a time, but try to finish them quickly - (only so much room in my sewing room), but too, I can easily get 'bored' of a project, if it sits too long.
Looking forward to your finish!
looking forward to seeing what this one will look like completed, I love your use of solids
ReplyDeleteLike you I enjoy finishing projects one at a time! But every once in a while something does get shelved! I'm excited to see this one Lorna!
ReplyDeleteWell, to have successfully have finished all your WIP's with the exception of one is quite an accomplishment! It's funny how one technique appeals to one person, while it's the thing that drags on a project for another. I love PP, but I know it's a little bit like fans of Elvis and the Beatles... you can find fans of both, but usually most people strongly prefer one over the other.
ReplyDeleteGood luck on your progress... is that Basic Grey grunge? I'm such a huge grunge fan, that is usually shows up somewhere in almost everything that I do!
Number 90 ! Congratulations Lorna. I've enjoyed these over the last year : )
ReplyDeleteSuch pretty colours Lorna! I am looking forward to seeing this one.

I work on about 12 things at once...the finishes take a long time. Your w.i.p. looks great. Looking forward to seeing it finished.
ReplyDeletewoo... I vote that you use the cut offs to make coordinating pillow covers.
ReplyDeleteThis is so cool. I would never have guessed that using triangles was the way to go for the pattern. I'm glad you found it and are finishing it.
ReplyDeleteI wish I had the strength you do! I seem to need multiple projects going... That said, I LOVE this! Can't wait to see what you do with it. :)
ReplyDeleteWow, Lorna! What a pretty UFO to find! I love pulling out old projects that I'd half/fully forgotten about and falling in love with them again. Yes, I have plenty of "up there" boxes, between being a cyclical worker and having about 20 years of occasional purchases but no sewing time. I'm so glad I have a different rhythm that works now! This is going to be so very pretty when you get it all together.
ReplyDeleteSuch pretty colors! And wow, you only have one UFO?! I was just going through my list of to do's this morning..I've got some work to do! :)
ReplyDeleteOne UFO, you are amazing. I think last count I has 15. Probably a whole lot more now. I am trying to stock my Etsy Shop for the holidays so everything else has been put on hold. It is either that or get a job. YUK
ReplyDeleteI remember when you started this quilt last year. Hope you finish it because I would like the pattern I think.
Debbie
Oh wow! Those are looking great. I hear ya on the paper piecing. It's not a love of mine either.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you got your Gossip Girl quilt out again! I think it looks really cool. Hopefully this time you will see it through instead of stashing it away again -- it's way too pretty to be left for dead on the top shelf! Like you, I used to be strict about seeing a quilt through from beginning to end without any side projects, but then I started my first hand stitched applique project, a BOM on Erin Russek's blog over a year ago. Once I had all of my pieced and appliqued blocks finished, so many other people had posted their finished quilt pictures to the Flickr group... I just couldn't bear to have mine be just like everyone else's. So I started thinking about different things I could do with the setting to make my quilt "my own," and decided that I wanted to set my large center medallion straight instead of on point and fill the space between the medallion and the on point border blocks with smaller pieced borders. And that stalled me out, because how on Earth was I going to know how big to make each of those borders and be sure that my finished border of large pieced and appliqued blocks was going to fit perfectly??? So I set it aside, and started playing with some bear paw blocks. Decided I wanted to alternate them with floating smaller sawtooth stars, fought to get the points perfect on the little stars, and then discovered that the hand dyed marble fabric I used for my star was a bleeder! :-( So I set it aside, and started working on a California King sized paper pieced pineapple quilt -- I have half of the blocks done for that one. And some time after setting aside the appliqued BOM blocks I started working on my own design for needle turned applique, well, a design that I Frankensteined together from a few published designs and then added and subtracted a few details... I got overwhelmed about a month or two ago when I realized that I had so many overwhelming projects in progress at once, so I started a "quick and easy" baby quilt for no baby in particular. This was supposed to recharge my mojo by giving me a FINISH -- but once I got the top together and put it on my design wall, I've kind of felt "meh" about it. Because it was quick and easy, it's not all that exciting -- so it languishes for want of borders and quilting. I have to keep reminding myself sometimes that this is a HOBBY and it is supposed to be FUN -- when I start stressing out about how long I have been working on something and whether or not my quilts are getting finished as fast as those of other bloggers, it feels like it's a job! And who needs THAT?!
ReplyDeleteI really like this design and look forward to seeing it come together!
