I shared on instagram - mid quilt. This scallop quilting stitch was new to me. I had mentioned in my tutorial post for Quilting With Your Walking Foot my desire to try out some of the other decorative stitches found on my machine. This stitch comes set at a maximum stitch length and width. I used a dark grey Gutermann thread on both top and in bobbin.
It would have been nice to have the scallops be longer in length. But it quilted up fast! The only thing is, with a stitch like this, you have to quilt from top to bottom. You can't start in the middle and quilt down to the edge then turn the quilt to finish the other end.
This time I kept the details to a minimum, using a medium grey thread to satin stitch the tiniest of eyes.
And the back of the quilt turned out looking pretty good. I was afraid that dark grey thread would stand out like a sore thumb against the white in the backing, especially using that crazy wavy stitch.
The backing is this fun Ampersand Typography in white that I also used as a backing for this custom order patchwork baby quilt back in December.
This quilt finish was the 33rd use of my 100 labels ordered from

Lorna--This is so stinking adorable! I love everything about it. Isn't it so fun when everything comes together? Very well done.
ReplyDeleteSuper cute, Lorna! Congratulations on the finish! :)
ReplyDeleteThat is really cute...and I like the quilting. Just looked at the scallop stitch myself the other day.
ReplyDeleteThis has got to be my favourite of all the wonderful animal quilts you have done over the last couple of months. Love everything about it. I imagine your designs will be on cots, beds and bedroom walls all over the world.
ReplyDeleteI have got to finish the elephants before I start this one! PS I vote for giraffes next.
ReplyDeleteOhhh, dear Lorna - congratulations on this beautiful finish!!!
ReplyDeleteThis quilt looks amazing! Although I thought the eyes of the top left zebra were those flowers - its all I can see! I really like the scalloped stitch too it looks cool :-)
ReplyDeleteI love this zany version - the fabrics are perfect for it! Great quilt!
ReplyDeleteThis is absolutely beautiful, Lorna!
ReplyDeleteThese Zebra quilts are just darling! You have done it again with the cutest patterns and piecing for animal quilts.
ReplyDeleteThis zany version is just too darn cute, Lorna! Congrats on a great finish - going to have to check and see if my machine has that stitch too!!
ReplyDeleteI love the way you have quilted this!! I do not have many decorative stitches and of course the ones I do have are on a smaller machine that I do not use for the little machine quilting that I do - but I have thought to try some of them out on a baby quilt perhaps and see how it would turn out. Thanks for the inspiration that you share
ReplyDeleteThis is also so cute. Why are you calling it a cheater block?
ReplyDeleteThis block using the black and white prints does not require piecing the stripes like the blocks I showed last week. So it's a little easier to make these blocks. That's why I called them cheater blocks.
DeleteI'm enraptured. This is just the cutest quilt ever.....next to Elephant Parade, of course. Which, I'm proud to say, I've managed to complete more than halfway in just 3 days! The more blocks I make, the more excited I get! Have a wonderful day!
ReplyDeleteThis is so cute Lorna! Looks great with the scallop stitch too - I'm going to have to try that one.
ReplyDeleteSo cute! Great pattern design.
ReplyDeleteI love the scallop quilting; I think it would be cute on a sweet baby girl quilt, kind of looks like ruffles. Or maybe water, for a nautical baby boy quilt... Thanks for the suggestion.
The zebras are darling in the black and white prints too.
ReplyDeleteZany ZebraZ is sooo fun Lorna! You chose the greatest fabrics too! Love the scalloped quilting - my machine won't do it that big. Now I can't decide which way to make your zebras when I sew the quilt - both are so cute! Maybe I will mix them up - some stripey and some patterned.
ReplyDeleteI love the whole animal thang you have gonig on, Lorna! Just bought the elephants and the zebras and can't wait to make these for my cousin's kids! GREAT JOB! And the quilting you did withthe scallops looks almost 3-D. Very cool.
ReplyDeleteThis is just too cute. Working on finishing the elephant parade before starting the zebras. What about a quilt with elephants and zebras??
ReplyDeleteSew adorable! I will make this one day~love YOUR designs, Lorna :)
ReplyDeleteYou continue to wow me! I love these cute zebras ... perfect design for a child's quilt. And your quilting really is special - how fast do you go with this?
ReplyDeleteI am just finishing the binding on my Elephant Parade. It turned out really cute and I did the quilting with my walking foot. I bought the pattern for the zebras, can't wait to start that one. Love the quilting and your imagination. Thanks for the inspiration.

ReplyDeleteHi Lorna
I love these beasties. I want to make a few blocks. They are delightful
I think you are really creative and I am so glad I found your blog!!
Wow. Awesome zebras!
ReplyDeleteWow, I love how the scallop stitching turned out. Been thinking if trying it out, but you are the reason I even tried the squiggle stitch. It turned out awesome!
ReplyDeleteWhoops, hit enter to fast! Meant you are the reason I tried the squiggle stitch using your instructions, so I'll have to try this one coming up. Great finish, love the grey thread too.
ReplyDeleteThe Zany Zebras are adorable. Thought cheater fabric would look cheesy - but I love the way they came out and the scalloped quilting. I need to cheat a zebra or two.
ReplyDeleteI love those pink ears. This is the cutest quilt and the scallops are great. Debbie
ReplyDeleteIt is so cute and fun and fabulous! :)
ReplyDeleteAdorable as always!
ReplyDeleteIt's so cute, Lorna! Love the little bird :)

My Elna has that stitch too, I've used it on a rainbow quilt and loved it. I also have a button though that mirror images the stitch so that the scallops would be on the right instead of the left(hope that makes sense). That way you can turn the quilt halfway through. Do you have the Elna excellence 760? I think it's the button underneath the mode button. You've probably already found this out though, I'm a bit behind on my blog reading.
ReplyDeleteI missed this one and love that backing!!! You find the best fabric!!!
