So back in March, I used this pattern and some Charley Harper prints to make myself a quilted jacket for my birthday. The final reveal post can be found here.
My mom adored this jacket. And so I offered to make her one for her birthday, too! She chose the red colourway for her Charlie Harper prints from Birch Fabrics.
Me and the birthday girl!
Mom requested a lining and to have the jacket lengthened. The pattern calls for the zipper to be a part of the collar. I
lengthened the jacket by 2" and then used the same size zipper.
So it does not go up into the collar. I am so happy with how it turned out!
She just could not get over that "We Are $ew Worth It" button.
I got that sassy button from Sam at Hunter's Design Studio here.
After I had the jacket pieces sewn together, but not yet lined, I got her to try it on for a fitting. It was then that she mentioned she would like to have some inside pockets. They turned out okay, but would have been so much easier to do if I had known beforehand.
This is only the second garment piece that I have ever made. I learned so much from the first experience. And got to learn a little more making one for my mom. Now I have a third jacket to make... My son has requested one in camouflage style... So I have an order placed for his birthday in September!
My mom has some experience quilting, but mostly she is a sewist. She made clothes for us when we were kids. And now she sews for other kids.
A few years ago, my mom began sewing dresses for the children in Africa through Little Dresses for Africa. During that time, she has made over 750 pillow case dresses. She has also scoured the sales racks for specials on shorts and t-shirts for little boys. Her contributions have been shipped overseas. And her hard work has paid off in the rewards of happy smiling faces!
This photo was given to her by the mission worker who delivered a shipment of clothing which my mom had contributed to. These are dresses that my mom made!

Little Dresses for Africa is a non-profit 501c3, Christian organization, which provides relief to the children of Africa. Simple dresses are made out of pillow cases, and distributed through the orphanages, churches and schools in Africa to plant in the hearts of little girls that they are worthy!
The Little Dresses for Africa link can be found on my Quilts 4 A Cause page under my header. There are many suggestions for charity quilting listed there. If you would like to share suggestions for other worthy causes which

ReplyDeleteGreat jackets Lorna, it is apparent you gained your talent from your mother, What a wonderful gift your mother is providing to others. Perhaps your daughter will someday carry on the tradition having been exposed to such inspiration.
ReplyDeleteGreat present for your Mother, Lorna, and it suits her well. The little girls certainly seem very proud of their new dresses too. It's good your mother can put her talents to such good use.

ReplyDeleteGreat photo of you both and love the photo of the girls wearing the dresses your mum made.
ReplyDeleteThe jackets are stunning, and I truly cannot believe they are your first foray into garment sewing. wow!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe this is just the beginning of your garment making. They look amazing!! Love the photo of both of you wearing your jackets!
ReplyDeleteYou two are so beautiful! Love both jackets. Your quilting is so wonderful. Hugs to mom!
ReplyDeleteIts such a wonderful sight to see Mom and Daughter together. Both of you look amazing in those Wow Jackets. You are a natural seamstress and how courageous of you to embark on a complicated pattern and pass with flying colors. Love the prints and colors you chose for both Jackets. Happy Mothers Day to both talented and generous souls.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful jackets. You did a great job.
ReplyDeleteThat is your second garment? Seriously impressed! Beautiful job, Lorna. Happy Mothers Day to you both!
ReplyDeleteYou guys look great! I cannot believe that is only your second, fabulous job! And your mom is a sweetheart for all her charity! Happy Mother's Day!
ReplyDeleteAmazing job on both jackets! You both look fabulous!!! "Keep sewing on," as you would say, Lorna!! Enjoy, your weekend. Happy Mother's Day!!!!
ReplyDeleteI am sew impressed. Both jackets look amazing and even better together. What an awesome mother/daughter picture. I also love your label.
ReplyDeleteSuper nice jackets. Great job. I just adore those little dresses!! Such a blessing to them
ReplyDeleteBoth jackets look wonderful... and I do so need a medium weight jacket around here. Most of the year is too warm for my heavy jacket, and much of the spring and fall are too cool for my light-weight jacket - especially in the evenings. So... how many yards of quilted material, and what length zipper did you use? I think an unlined version of this jacket might be just what I need...
ReplyDeleteYou and your mother are amazing and beautiful people. The jackets are the tinsel on the tree! :)
ReplyDeleteTypical mothers being difficult with their requests! ;) The two of you look great in your matching jackets! I really can't believe that's your second one, wow!
ReplyDeleteWOW! Great job on the jackets! You and your mom are ROCKING IT! Perfect for mothers day. I can't believe this is just your 2nd clothing constructions. So, perfect looking!
ReplyDeleteSo sweet to see the pictures of the kids with dresses your mom made. What a great cause!
Beautiful jacket, Lorna! Your mom must be thrilled with hers ~ she deserves it for sure!
ReplyDeleteGood on ya Lorna. What a great gift. You are a good daughter and I bet your Mum feels extra spoilt!
ReplyDeleteboth jackets have worked a treat, can see you going into mass production for these, I am sure you would have a lot of buyers. I think our local EG have done some pillow case dresses but I no longer am a member, subs got too expensive and I needed the money for fabrics!
ReplyDeleteI love 'em! They turned out so great!
ReplyDeleteWhat a super sweet photo of the little girls wearing their dresses. Way to go, Lorna's Mom!! That is a staggering number of little dresses to have contributed. Lotsa love there. Your Mom's jacket turned out beautifully.
ReplyDeleteJust look at you two models-Love both the jackets-you did good girl!! And bless your mom for doing so much sewing and giving!!!
ReplyDeleteAnother beautiful finish and such a wonderful gift for your mom!
ReplyDeleteAWesome jackets.. lovely
ReplyDeleteBeautiful jackets, both of them. I really love the colors and fabrics you used in your mother's. And your mother deserves an extra special blessing this Mother's Day, for all of the dresses she has sewn and clothes she has provided to children in Africa. Even though you are grown up, just think of the hundreds of surrogate children she is now sewing for. I believe that we all have lots of soul mothers in our lives, and some mothers have an infinity of soul children!
ReplyDeleteAnd, since your jackets have been sticking in the front of my mind as I caught up with other blogs, I had to come back and say that I am sure you have plenty of scraps and fabric pieces left to make tote bags or purses or whatever that go along with each of your jackets.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of purses, check out the fabric on the purse in this link:

ReplyDeleteCongrats on meeting your goal! I'm very impressed that it is only your second garment you made! You both should be proud of each other for the things you do. Yay for moms and daughters :)
ReplyDeleteYour mom is so wonderful to help out this way. That is a very beautiful photo of the two of you!! Have a wonderful weekend :)

God bless your mom for thinking of those little children. I am amazed you did so well on your first two coats. They are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteYour mom's jacket looks great too! And those girls in their pillowcase dresses are adorable. What a great way to use sewing time to make a difference. Good for her.
ReplyDeleteThose jackets are gorgeous! Nice work!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful jackets Lorna! LOVE LOVE LOVE that fabric!
ReplyDeleteYour mom's jacket turned out as beautifully as yours. Is there anything you can't do??? Thank you for sharing your mom's charitable sewing. It's inspiring to see the dresses actually being worn by the girls. I hope she had a wonderful birthday.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great finish! I love the final result - it is amazing to see such similar fabrics and the same pattern (minus a few changes) look so different. Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteLorna, your mom's jacket is just great (maybe you don't remember that I totally love your own jacket!). Can't wait to see your son's next fall.
