Sometimes one thing just leads to another. You are in the middle of making a quilt. And throughout that process, your thoughts lead you to develop a new idea.
These blocks may seem identical to the blocks I made previously. At that time, I shared a tutorial for the Kansas Dugout block and for my easy method of sewing Y seams. My blocks actually have sides that are longer than the traditional Kansas Dugout block.
In the tutorial post, I showed how my use of a directional print limited my layout to the following setting.
Standard block layout |
I explained that I preferred the look of the on point setting, shown below, how it is more appealing and
reflects the alternate name for this block - The Lattice Block.
The Lattice block |
I ended that post with a picture of the Susannah, noting that I had always admired this quilt block and felt that it would make a gorgeous quilt.
Well, that did get me thinking. And as I completed the Fruity O's quilt, which was revealed in this post, my mind was working away on that Susannah block.
Turn her on point...
Susannah on point |
Add an adjoining block...
Then remove the block lines.....
Remove the block lines and you have Oh Suz-Anna! |
And you have this.... Oh, Suz-Anna!
Step one in writing your own patterns: Come up with a new design.
Step two would be to plan out how to make that design.
Oh, Suz-Anna! in progress on the design wall |
At least I think this is a new design. Please let me know if you have seen this somewhere before!
I will be sharing a tutorial and my progress later this week. Let me know if you would be interested in making an Oh, Suz-Anna of your own!
Keep On Quilting On!
And Happy Mother's Day!
this looks lovely. I liked to give it a try.

ReplyDelete1. I like your new blog layout. 2. Never seen it, looks like you have an original :). 3. Your y-seams are perfect!
ReplyDeleteOh Yes I would love to try it.
ReplyDeleteYou have a good sense of humour! I love the name of this pattern. Even though this has some similarities to the Kansas Dugout block. I think this is a original design, I haven't seen it before!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see it all complete!
Oh I love it but those dreaded "Y" seams! I dont know if I would dare to try it!
ReplyDeleteI love the look of the latice block, so much that I'm using a variation a little different than yours to do with my FWQ. Thanks for showing us how this block looks both repeated and on point!
ReplyDeleteI'm having hard time to imagine it in different combo. This one is too busy for me and I'm getting lost in the design a bit. You know I'm crazy color order freak :-)
ReplyDeleteIt's a pretty block and I love the fabrics & colors. It looks cheerful and sunny.
ReplyDeleteI love the pattern. Would like to try it...only thing is, I would like to add some solids to it. In India, we don't get designer fabric in copordinated bundles, hence will have a tough time matching prints!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely lovely...waiting to try it :)

Visiting from the new group! I love this block! I have not tried anything like this...I have to admit I am intimidated by this but I really want to try! I love your explanations and pictures!
ReplyDeleteLove your new look!! I almost thought I was on the wrong page. OH SUZ-ANNA!!! Yes, this is a great pattern. Your top looks great with all those wonderful colors. I'm impressed!
ReplyDeleteNice work! I would love a tutorial as I've got a bunch of small strip scraps to use up, and this would be perfect.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the inspiration!
I have never seen this pattern before. It looks great, the colors are joyful.
ReplyDeleteYour quilts are always so beautiful, I love the happy colors of this one :)
ReplyDeleteReally love the look of the blocks on point! I have only sewed Y seams once but would love to give this a whirl, maybe in a smaller version. I have not seen this pattern before now.
ReplyDeleteThis is a new one, to me. It's a great block and would lend itself to a wide range of options.
ReplyDeleteI would get some AMH Field study Feathers in Pomegranete which is on sale. Lots of beautiful fabrics in the sale bin.
ReplyDeleteOh, Suz-Anna! She is pretty and maybe sweet talking but I spy y seams!!!
ReplyDeleteVery nice! Those bright cheerful colors are great and I like how the straight squares between the blocks stand out more than I would have thought. Very cool.
ReplyDeleteAfter a while a lot of block/quilt designs begin to look a alike to me. Since color choices can make a block look entirely different, who knows. I do like this design though and would be interested in learning how to make it.
