Welcome to the Let's Bee Social!
So glad to have you join us for the Let's Bee Social weekly linky party!
Remember those days at the fair spent going round and round on the Merry-Go-Round? I do!!!
This love of carousel horses has led me to come up with a new concept. And this has led me to consider making it a series. I also have the instructions written for the Deer and the Lion. BUT... now I am wondering if anyone would even be interested in making these. They are definitely different. And I think they would make great wall quilts. But for who? And then there is the saddle and rod that make them only suitable as Carousel rides. But they could be make without either or both.
What is YOUR honest opinion???
One more thing....
Last week I received an email from Sheryl who wrote, "Dear Lorna, I love the dog quilt pattern. I'm new to quilting but my dogs came out very nice (thank you so much) anyway I'm ready to quilt it and want to do this myself. I bought a stencil of just squiggly lines but not sure if you would quilt with these lines across the dogs. Can't tell how your quilts are done. Thank you"
As someone who did a lot of outline and echo quilting when I first began, I could understand Sheryl's reluctance to quilt across the dog blocks. So I encouraged her to go ahead and quilt right over them. I sent her a link to my Gallery Page to give her a chance to see that I use this method on all of my quilts. And I also mentioned that I do not use a stencil or mark any lines. I just use my walking foot and wiggle the quilt in waves to make random wavy lines.
It was only three days later that Sheryl wrote back, sending photos, "I've finished my puppy dog quilt thanks to you quilting advise. It's for our new grandson and I love the backing - all puppies! Thank you again."
I replied, "Oh my GOODNESS! I love your sweet doggies! The quilting looks fabulous and you found the perfect backing for this this quilt. I am so happy to see you used your imagination to made a couple of dogs with their ears folded down. And the paw print corner blocks are a fabulous way to add a border. Thank you so much for sending the photos, Sheryl. Would you consider allowing me to share this quilt with my readers providing I only use your first name?"
Sheryl agreed, "Absolutely you can share my quilt. I changed the ears because my daughter that it's going to has a black lab. His head is a little boxy but that's all I could come up with. Thank you again. Your info inspired me."
If you would like to make a quilt like Sheryl's, you can find the free Dog Gone Cute quilt along here or you can purchase the Dog Gone Cute pattern from my shop here.

Oh Lorna, my favorite is the lion! Great job! Sheryl did a great job with Dog Gone Cute and what a great binding too!
ReplyDeleteOh my good - these are very pretty and cute Merry-Go-Round critters. So very charming. =)
ReplyDeleteSheryl did a great job on her puppy quilt! The ears were so clever to get it to resemble a black lab.
ReplyDeleteI love your carousel animals, they are gorgeous but I can see your conundrum. I think if carousels are meaningful to someone then they are going to make these. The hard part is done, the instructions are written! And as you said, they can be made with or without the saddle and pole. I say go for it!
Love the carousel animals! Just wondering how the link is already closed? It is Wednesday August 23 at 7:16 am and the link is closed already??
ReplyDeleteI would definitely make a carousel horse quilt. Currently making a baby girl quilt with flower blocks and this would have been great in nursery. Love it!
ReplyDeleteLOVE the Carousel patterns!!! LOVE them!
ReplyDeleteI could see them as a baby quilt or a wall hanging in the babies room! So cute!
I adore the carousel patterns, so cute! I can see the animals positioned in a circle around a decorative middle.
ReplyDeleteYou are so creative! These are great patterns... I probably wouldn't make one at this time, but if I had little ones in my life, I would!
ReplyDeleteI love that dog quilt you shared!
You know there will be plenty of people interested in your Carousel! You had me at the horses! Great advice for Sheryl on quilting and she did a fantastic job!
ReplyDeleteI needed these 15 years ago, when a friend was decorating her nursery in carousel horses.
ReplyDeleteOkay, I've never been a huge fan of the animal quilts, but I would adore a carousel animals quilts! Or wall hanging! Or whatever! Make the patterns for me!!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the carousel blocks! And, as the mother of granddaughters who love carousels, I would more than likely want to use your pattern to make quilts for them. Thank you so much, Lorna, for your blog. I always love reading it and seeing what you've been up to! (lynnstck@yahoo.com)
ReplyDeleteI really like the idea of a carousel quilt, especially if there were a block or two mixed in there with other elements of the fair or carnival!
ReplyDeleteI have (and LOVE) your dog gone pattern and think that Sheryl did a fabulous job. I've only ever made one for a placemat... I need to make a whole quilt!
ReplyDeleteAs for your Carousel blocks, I can see the issue you have. As others have said, though, if you believe in them then others probably do too so go forth! Many designs are specific and there's nothing wrong with that. My only issue is the front leg on most of them (especially the deer) looks out of proportion (longer). Maybe it's just me. Sorry
I too love the carousel blocks!!!
ReplyDeleteI love carousel animals. I think it would be fun to have a series of quilts with one animal on each to rotate.
ReplyDeleteLove the lion and the deer.
ReplyDeleteI love the carousel animals and think each one would make a great independent wall hanging or a baby quilt. I can also see them all in one quilt using the 19" x15.5" blocks but would like at least two more animals to join the fun. The lion is my favorite.
ReplyDeleteLove Sheryl's Dog Gone Cute Quilt and her own design in there - also great quilting! Love your carousel ponies and your creativity by adding the others. Wow Lorna, you are really on a roll :)!
ReplyDeleteYour carousel animals are very clever. I like the lion a lot. They had lions , tigers, elephants, giraffe, on merry go round I used to ride on. Some were all horses though. I would be least inclined to make the deer. Maybe if I didn't use Christmas colors in it. It seems like there was also an ostrich included sometimes. Well. You are making me search my memories of the good old days! Thanks.
ReplyDeleteActually, the pole should be more into the saddle area. Nearly the middle. Maybe that is why the other person thought it looked unbalanced??
ReplyDeleteI love the lion! You need a unicorn, too. And maybe a zebra.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your carousel animals! Imagine these on a wall all in a row :-D
ReplyDeleteLove the carousel animals. These are just beautiful. I love the colors you added. You are so busy
ReplyDeleteI think you are so creative and inspiring.
Sheryls quilt is superb! Well done
I looked at it closely and really it is so great. I love the fabrics she chose! /this one will be a family treasure
Love Love Love the ideas...my Dad was in the "Lions" a club that does alot of special projects for their communities
ReplyDeleteI think I will do a mini in Xmas fabric...thanks. Great Job...
Hi Lorna! I see your point about the carousel animals patterns, but nobody can really say how their patterns will be used, so I say go ahead and list them for sale. I've seen so many quilts that I never would have thought of that I'm sure that someone will be in love with one (or more) of the patterns and make something fabulous that no one else would. You've already done the work, so what is there to lose? The animals are amazing and sure to make someone an amazing quilt.
ReplyDeleteSharon's quilt is fabulous and I love the Labradors. The carousel blocks are fabulous!
ReplyDeleteI love you imagination Lorna! All your carousel animals are stunning! xAli
ReplyDeleteYet another cute block. Well done. I need to head over to purchase your giraffe family pattern -- someone has requested a baby quilt using that pattern.
ReplyDeleteI love carousel animals and these are great. I don't have a need for a baby quilt but I could see individual blocks as a pillow. I feel sure people would go for these.
ReplyDeleteYour carousel horse 🐴 deer 🦌 and lion 🦁 are all adorable! I love them all! I think you are so creative and talented. I say yes do it!
ReplyDeleteI can see these carousel animals scampering across a wall hanging in a nursery, and as you say, you could choose not to add the rod and use them in a quilt, I love the lion by the way!
ReplyDeleteI have always had a fascination for carousel horses. I used to collect them. That deer would be perfect for Christmas and I would definitely consider buying the pattern.
ReplyDeleteI think pretty much every child would love a circus/carousel quilt :-) I consider myself a big kid haha
ReplyDeleteI envision a dragon or crocodile, a tiger and and and This has endless opportunities to create patterns.
Love it!

I love carousels and think that a lot of people might be interested in a pattern series! My son (age 3) loves the carousel at the zoo--his favorite is the panda. I think that the other comments who have mentioned that you never know how someone will use a pattern are right.
ReplyDeleteI love the carousel animals, especially the lion! Originally I wasn't sure why you were worried, but I guess you might be wondering if younger people would be able to relate. I think they would enjoy the nostalgic, historical part of it. The dog quilt is adorable too. I especially like the folded corners - looks more like my dog.
ReplyDeleteI would totally be interested in making these. There's a vintage carousel that we visit at least once a year in Hampton, Virginia. And we love the carousel at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, Virginia. I wonder how difficult it would be to make a quilt "in-the-round" with these to sort of make them into a carousel shape. :)
