This Winter Mittens runner was a really quick make. Perfect way to cheer me up and get me in a Christmas mood. While I worked like a little elf in my quilting studio.
This fun little runner was made using a few selections from the new Sea Salt Sandy collection from Island Batik for the mittens. And an anonymous white tone on tone for the background.
For the backing, I found this fabulous print from the Doodles collection by Northcott Fabrics at Needles & Pins in downtown Listowel. I don't drop in there very often because her prices are quite steep. But I am so glad I did because this turned out to be The.Perfect.Print to compliment those beautiful batiks!
The same fabric was used for the binding along with a hint of purple for the flange. Although I used to make it quite often, it's been a while since I made this type of binding so I found it helpful to refer to my Flanged Binding Tutorial to refresh my memory.
I quilted this runner with my walking foot in organic wavy lines across the width, this time using plain white Guetermann polyester thread. And, for the first time ever, I used fusible fleece for the batting.

This project came together quickly and is a great pattern for using up some of your small scraps! Runner not long enough? Just add on another 13" for each set of additional mittens to the original 40" long. This includes the sashing strip between the blocks. So a runner with four sets of mittens would be 53" long.
And the pairs of mittens block would be a great addition to other cute projects. Great for gifts! Like mug rugs, placemats, or even cute little cushions for brightening up your sofa. A one pair block of mittens finishes at 12" wide by 10" tall.
"Winter Mittens" in Sea-Salt Sandy finished at approximately 12" x 40"
and was the 66th use of my 100 labels

ordered from Ikaprint.
This time I used some Daysail by Bonnie & Camille for Moda There's something to be said for that Aqua and Red! These little runners easily say "Winter" without screaming "Christmas!" and can be used for the entire season.
That backing.... Mmmmm....
So pretty, I'd be tempted to have it facing up!
"Winter Mittens" in Daysail also finished at approximately 12" x 40"

ReplyDeleteThese are sooooooo cute!
ReplyDeleteCute as cute can be, Lorna! Just like all of your patterns! I did finally finish my zebra quilt top, but I need to find the perfect backing. It's precious!
ReplyDeleteOh how sweet, especially the red and white and turquoise variation - that's my favourite colour combination for Christmas!
ReplyDeleteVery cute and perfect for that winter table. Now, if I can just figure out how to make it look right in my Florida home... oh well, but it's a great gift idea for my family that lives up north!
ReplyDeleteThere is something about the color combination of aqua and red that go hand in hand with winter and Christmas time. Your cute little mittens make me want to warm up some hot chocolate with the tiny little marshmallows.
ReplyDeleteNeat pattern and perfect fabric choices!
ReplyDeleteHow do you do this so fast? Or don't you ever sleep? Maybe YOU"RE a robot! Cute cute idea for a table runner or maybe a pillow...
ReplyDeleteLove that phrase "anonymous" fabric--I have lots of anonymous fabrics since very few have names any more. I love your pretty little table runners. That blue/red one would definitely carry right past Christmas into January and February.
ReplyDeleteLove your Winter Mittens Pattern Lorna! So adorable and perfectly seasonable right through the chilly months! Makes me want to get out the cocoa cups. And the flanged binding is a wonderful touch.
ReplyDeleteSo cute ! I loved seeing this in two different color ways.
ReplyDeleteSeriously, Lorna, you're keeping me buried in so many cute projects. I was busy sewing reindeer yesterday, but now I want to sew mittens. Loving it, though!
ReplyDeleteI think you made that aqua and red one just for me. I've pinned this for future reference. Good grief. How many of your patterns can I have on my Wanna Do list at one time? :)
ReplyDeleteSuper cute and I love it in Daysail!
ReplyDeleteCute mittens and two finishes.
