My day on the EQ7: Seasons Row-A-Long

Back in May, I was approached by Amy of Sew Incredibly Crazy to participate in this super fun quilt along. Each participant was to design a quilt row, 8" x 60", featuring blocks that represent a season.




For my row, I chose the season of fall. When I contemplated fall, the first thing I thought of were squirrels scurrying around collecting food for the long winter ahead.

Given that the corn cobs and the acorn are as large as the squirrels... It won't take them long to store up enough food to keep them through those cold winter months to come!

I was not making a quilt, so borders were added to my blocks to make a festive fall table runner and a set of cute placemats. The table runner finished at 11" x 34" and the placemats are each 12" x 18".

All the fabrics for the making of the blocks were generously provided by Northcott Fabrics. Thank you Northcott Fabrics! And I made a fast finish of the quilting with organic wavy lines using my walking foot.

The fabrics for the backing and binding were found hiding in . The backing is Nature's Glow #2376M by Ro Gregg for Northcott Fabrics and binding is Winter's Grace #3029 by Mark Lipinski's Home for Northcott Fabrics.

Of course, I used my EQ7 quilt program to design my row. Electric Quilt makes it easy to change any details of your plan. And allows you to save your file and share it with friends as an attachment.

A word or two about the piecing methods used.....

As with all my patterns, these blocks use a traditional piecing method known as the “stitch and flip” method. Being as I press my seams open, and recommend you do too for these blocks, I have renamed this method - STOP.

Stitch along the diagonal line
Trim 1/4" away from the seam
Open your seam and finger press
Press the seam open using your iron


Sew all pieces with right sides together.

For example:

Figure 1 shows all the pieces required for the step. Draw a diagonal line across wrong side of the squares, place them right sides together on the corners of the rectangle and sew along the diagonal lines, shown in red, as shown in Figure 2. Trim a 1/4" seam, as shown in Figure 3. Open your seams and finger press. Press the seams open, as shown in Figure 4.
