For my row, I chose the season of fall. When I contemplated fall, the first thing I thought of were squirrels scurrying around collecting food for the long winter ahead.
Given that the corn cobs and the acorn are as large as the squirrels... It won't take them long to store up enough food to keep them through those cold winter months to come!
I was not making a quilt, so borders were added to my blocks to make a festive fall table runner and a set of cute placemats. The table runner finished at 11" x 34" and the placemats are each 12" x 18".
All the fabrics for the making of the blocks were generously provided by Northcott Fabrics. Thank you Northcott Fabrics! And I made a fast finish of the quilting with organic wavy lines using my walking foot.
The fabrics for the backing and binding were found hiding in . The backing is Nature's Glow #2376M by Ro Gregg for Northcott Fabrics and binding is Winter's Grace #3029 by Mark Lipinski's Home for Northcott Fabrics.
Here are a few pictures of the blocks before I made them into the table decor items....
Standing Squirrel blocks 8" x 14" |
Corn Cob blocks 8" x 10" |
Acorn block 8" x 8" |
Of course, I used my EQ7 quilt program to design my row. Electric Quilt makes it easy to change any details of your plan. And allows you to save your file and share it with friends as an attachment.

A word or two about the piecing methods used.....
As with all my patterns, these blocks use a traditional piecing method known as the “stitch and flip” method. Being as I press my seams open, and recommend you do too for these blocks, I have renamed this method - STOP.
Stitch along the diagonal line
Trim 1/4" away from the seam
Open your seam and finger press
Press the seam open using your iron
Sew all pieces with right sides together.
For example:
Figure 1 shows all the pieces required for the step. Draw a diagonal line across wrong side of the squares, place them right sides together on the corners of the rectangle and sew along the diagonal lines, shown in red, as shown in Figure 2. Trim a 1/4" seam, as shown in Figure 3. Open your seams and finger press. Press the seams open, as shown in Figure 4.

All three of your block designs are adorable and I love the idea of making a table runner and placemats. I often describe my quilting style as the fiber equivalent of an omnivore. My quilts are usually scrappy, organic and color-rich.
ReplyDeleteCute Rowby row, and foxes! I love paper piecing blocks, and modern quilts
ReplyDeleteSuch cute blocks! I love to combine stitchery and handpiecing. And I especially love kind of a country style and scrappy quilts.
ReplyDeleteHi Lorna, thanks a lot for the patterns, love your work!
ReplyDeleteYou have so many great patterns, Lorna!
ReplyDeleteI love all kinds of quilting, but I mostly make scrappy ones.
The fox quilt design is a super one, I can see it on a bed down here. And as I really, really like blue fabrics, would make it just the same.
ReplyDeleteYour row is adorable (especially the squirrel, of course!) Love the fox quit too (almost as much as I love the Dog gone Cute!
ReplyDeleteoops, forgot--I usually do regular piecing but occasionally I do paper piecing, EPP, and applique! I'm very traditional but break-out into art quilts or very modern quilts now and them (fav. fabrics are 'civil war', 30's and batiks!)
ReplyDeleteI do love those squirrels, so cute, and the corn looks so effective, well done! Now September is here, these are prefect for the season!
ReplyDeleteI love EPP the most and am very happy sitting handpicking hex or dresden quilts very slowly. I also like to use precuts a lot, I enjoy quilting but am not too great at cutting. x
ReplyDeleteThose squirrels are so cute! I'm still new to quilting but I enjoy paper piecing and trying to incorporate scraps whenever possible.
ReplyDeleteSuch a nice row. Like the squirrels. I like scrappy quilts and tradititional piecing. Tried some paper piecing, but this is not so me.
ReplyDeletelove your patterns
ReplyDeleteYour row along contribution is brilliant, but what else is new? Basically, I'm a scrap quilter. Rarely do I afford myself lengths of coordinating fabrics or bundles of precuts, although they can be really tempting!
ReplyDeleteI like quilts that are pictorial in nature, so paper piecing is big with me, as well as the quilts you have been designing. Foxes is sooooo cute! Thanks for the chance to win.
ReplyDeleteI love your row Lorna! I'd say my quilting style is almost anything goes. I don't think I really stick to just 1 style.
ReplyDeleteI am an ENTHUSIASTIC quilter! Is that a style? I do lots of paper piecing, love brightly colored fabrics, and scrappy quilts are some of my favorites. When I make a quilt I want it to be interesting to look at. Love your row and the foxes pattern, thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great row pattern. I'm an eclectic quilter. I enjoy foundation paper piecing but I also enjoy traditional piecing. Thanks for the chance to win.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful row pattern! I'm everything except traditionnal quilter!
ReplyDeleteLove your fox pattern! I'm more of a traditional quilter, but I love the modern fabrics! Thanks for the chance to win!
ReplyDeleteThat Fox and Friends pattern would make a great quilt for one of my grandkids!
ReplyDeleteI love scrappy quilts in bright colours with lots of white.
I'm a traditional quilter with a touch of modern. Thanks for a chance to win.
ReplyDeleteI love art quilting and pictorial quilts
ReplyDeleteI love traditional piecing blocks best, and wish I could piece quilt tops none stop and have someone else do the 'quilting' part of it :)! Your Fox and Friends quilt is soooooo cute!
ReplyDeleteI still haven't decided which is my favorite style of quilting! If I like the pattern, I will give it a go.
ReplyDeleteI like modern quilt paterns.
ReplyDeleteI do traditional piecing of blocks. I love doing this part of the quilting process, not so much the "quilting" process. I do most of my quilting by hand, so have I several waiting me!! nlewis54 at gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteLove your squirrels. I am a traditional quilter. I like traditional piecing.but I am slowly
ReplyDeleteStarting to like the modern quilts. I love all of your quilts. thanks for the chance at the giveaway as I would love to make one of your patterns.
Well I used to be a topper...but now I do the whole thing myself. I said (because I tend to have a slightly modern look to my stuff), I'm a modern traditionalist.
ReplyDeleteI am a beginning quilter and I would say I am more of a traditional quilter although I like some of the modern stuff and with my inaccurate seams, some of my stuff looks modern (wonky). senstrings (at) yahoo (dot) com
ReplyDeleteThis is another really cute pattern. Great idea to put it on your pattern page so everyone can see all the other beauties you have to offer too.
ReplyDeleteYour row is so cute! I am a eclectic quilter. I like all kinds of quilts and do not consider myself any particular kind of quilter. I tend to like fresh and more modern quilts.
ReplyDeleteI like to try all sorts of designs. I do like the modern quilts out there today, but also enjoy the tried and true traditional patterns too.
ReplyDeleteI follow via email.
ReplyDeleteI usually quilt by what I see! Your patterns make me want to quilt!
ReplyDeleteSuper cute, but then we expect nothing less from you ;-) I am a traditional quilter that has transistioned over to modern pretty easily! It might depend on the moment which one I am each day, LOL
ReplyDeleteHow cute are these squirrels with the acorn. I'm a quilter who makes what she likes, and boy do I LOVE all your cute animals. Keep being creative!
ReplyDeleteYour row is super cute. Thank you so much for sharing. I am mostly a traditional quilter, but every once in a while I will do a modern quilt.
ReplyDeleteI love the corn! I do mostly piecing, but also paper piecing and applique.
ReplyDeletecork@pa.rr.com
Cute, cute row...thanks for the piecing instructions! You make it so easy to follow your patterns. I quilt all sorts of things, nothing in particular.
ReplyDeleteI'm a hodge podge quilter. I tend to adjust my style to my recipient. Even when I'm quilting just for me I tend to flit around the quilting world from traditional to modern. I just like to do it. The only thing I don't really like are frayed edges.
ReplyDeleteCute row Lorna! I think I would call myself a contemporary to modern quilter, although I do like applique as well. Loving paper piecing right now.
ReplyDeleteI love these squirrels and the corn cobs! I am a traditional quilter in the way that I love patchwork but I love modern prints and fabrics so I guess I like to meld traditional and modern into my own style :)

ReplyDeleteLove your row! Squirrels are so fun! lol Not sure what "Style" I am.....kind of Traditional I guess...but have tried Applique (am very slow..but the hand stitching was fun)....and like Colors! & Easy patterns! lol Thanks for chance to win your Drawing! :)
ReplyDeleteCute Blocks! I like traditional style.
ReplyDeleteI am a quilt when I can. There is always to many demands on my time, so I usually have a hand piecing project to take and sew, as well as a quilt by my machine, that I can grab some free time with. Love your quilt projects, they are so very cute!
ReplyDeleteI work on what I like which really runs the gamut from traditional blocks in traditional fabrics to modern quilts with lots of negative space. Most of my projects tend to be more modern, however.
ReplyDeleteGreat minds think alike. As I was making this row for my quilt I thought what fun placemat and/or table runner this would be for fall. Thanks for a WONDERFUL, WELL WRITTEN pattern!
ReplyDeleteI am a typical quilter. I have many quilts going at one time, many UFO's waiting, as well as many tops to be quilted. A large stash of fabric, although there is never the right fabric needed for the "perfect" quilt. Stacks of magazines and books by my bed, and visions of new quilts to start dancing through my head!
ReplyDeleteI am an "Eclectic" type of quilter, what ever catches my eye and moves me to want to create it.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your awe-inspiring talents and patterns Lorna and for the chance to win a cute pattern.

ReplyDeleteAwe sew cute! We rescued an orphan squirrel about 7 weeks ago. Got him all healthy and ready to release in another few weeks. Thanks for sharing this is excellent!
ReplyDeleteAre you making the EQ .PJ7 files available?
ReplyDeleteThis is so cute!
ReplyDeleteI've no one kind of style - love it all, always ready to try new things. Love your row!
ReplyDeleteQuilting style? Many - art quilts with hand stitch, modern improv, landscape and pieced quilts. I generally do not like to follow a specific pattern, but may start with one and go on my own tangent. My favorite part is playing with color and pattern.
ReplyDeletePS Your row is so cute, will make for a friend who has moved to the country and loves squirrels.
Cute little foxes! My style of quilting--LAZY and EASY!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE those squirrels!!!!! My quilting style is scrappy, and traditional with a twist of improv. -- I think, I'm still figuring out what it is. I love hand quilting, making something up at the spur of the moment, nine patches and old fashioned fabrics, and bits of humor and whimsy. sarah@forrussia.org
ReplyDeleteDon't have a quilting style....if I like the pattern I will try it out.....
ReplyDeleteYour lil guy is just too cute...with his ears of corn. I'm a scrappy quilter and a fusible applique nut! ;-)
ReplyDeleteEver since you came out with the Fox quilt, I loved it.
ReplyDeleteMy Style.....NEWBEE!
My quilting style is all over the board. I try and do all types, usually leaning toward traditional. Thank you so much for your tutorial. Love your row, and your inspiration.
ReplyDeleteLove all your animal patterns.
ReplyDeleteI am sort of eclectic... I like modern and traditional patterns. I like to machine quilt "minimally", and I love to use scraps as well as many fabrics from a coordinated fabric line. Your pattern is so cute!
ReplyDeleteSusie
I'm a careful quilter or a Lazy quilter. I prefer to piece either using tradition or paper piecing method. This method you mentioned sounds intriguing.
ReplyDeleteGreat post Lorna, I'm sew glad you were part of this Row-Along. Your fall row is full of fun and is very adorable.
ReplyDeleteI love the sweet corn blocks--so cute! My quilting style? All over the place--I like it all!
ReplyDeleteI love your blocks! I would say that I am a traditional quilter but I prefer to use solids. Thanks!
ReplyDeletePlease click on the delaineelliott above for my email link.
the blocks are just to cute
ReplyDeleteI am a hand quilter. I do put my blocks together with a sewing machine but I'm not really a fan of machine quilting.
ReplyDeleteI love scrappy things, big geometric designs and bright, happy colors.
ReplyDeleteOh I just love your squirrels! Thanks so much! I would have to say I'm a "Love it all" kind of quilter! I really do rarely see a fabric or project that I can't get excited about! pbstrand@msn.com
ReplyDeleteYour fox quilt would be perfect for my new grandson. I enjoy paper piece quilting. It's virtually mistake-proof!.
ReplyDeleteI think I would call myself a dabbler when it comes to quilting. I like to try everything at least once or twice. I do really love hand piecing and hand quilting and scrappiness, but that being said, I get excited about almost any technique and embrace it. I guess I am a quilter and proud of it.
ReplyDeleteI am a new quilter so I really don't have a style
ReplyDeleteMy favorite quilting is anything I'm making while participating in online QALs. I just love the sharing with others and seeing how differently everyone approaches the same pattern.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the free pdf pattern. I downloaded it. I am a fairly new quilter, having quilted years ago, was away from it for many years and am now back. So I guess I call myself as a learning quilter or a requilter. I like the new modern quilts. Since I'm fairly new to the quilting scene again, I've been following patterns made by others and I do enjoy reading your posts and seeing your creativity. Karen

Your fall row is perfect for September! Love the squirrel, acorn and corn patterns! Thank you so much for sharing! I like all kinds of quilting, traditional to art. There is always something to inspire and learn; and simply to create just for the fun of it!
ReplyDeleteI like a little bit of everything though batiks are my first choice in fabric. Thank you for the cute squirrels. They are much cuter than the ones digging around my yard.
ReplyDeleteI'm more of a traditional quilter. Cute squirrels.
ReplyDeleteYour patterns are always so gorgeous. I love the corn and acorn, especially as large as the squirrel. I'd describe myself as a happy quilter. Not great technically, love all different styes and jump from one enthusiasm to another. But loving it all. Thanks for the giveaway
ReplyDeleteI am a newbie quilter so sticking with beginner projects at present.
ReplyDeleteIain.ross30 at gmail dot com
I like modern looking quilts. Love for your fox and friends quilt. I have your pattern already and just finished yesterday adding the eyes and noses. All I need to do now is the quilt. It is adorable. Pattern was easy to follow too. Thanks. (debbie at wowilikethat dot com)
ReplyDeleteI am typically a traditional quilter loving the reproduction fabrics, but since there is a new baby grand-niece, I've been loving your patterns, they are adorable!
ReplyDeleteI like any kind of quilting techniques especially like stack n whack. Also my raffle copter entry was quilt.n.away@gmail.com. not sure if twits different than this post email.

ReplyDeleteLorna, thank you for the beautiful blocks!! I love them all!
ReplyDeleteI'm a newer quilter, I don't know if I have a style yet. I have loved making your quilt patterns and have so many on my list of things to do!!!!
I think I am a traditional quilter, but do like to try more modern quilts. I also like to follow patterns rather than designing my own.
ReplyDeleteI am a quilter wannabe. . . . I wannabe one and my Mama wants me to be one. . . I hope I can read enough to get the courage to actually do a quilt before my Mama goes to be with Jesus. . . she is 84 and in good health but you never know. Thank you for the squirrels and corn. I think I will make a "mini" quilt and call it placemats for my hubby who LOVES squirrels! Thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteI am a baby steps quilter...Lots of love to all the bloggers who provide wisdom, inspiration and motivation to those like me. crystalbluern at onlineok dot com
ReplyDeleteI guess I'm all over the place with my quilting. I like making traditional blocks with reproduction and modern fabrics. I also like whimsical applique. Sometimes I even follow patterns :)
ReplyDeleteMy quilting style is utility. I'm not artsy. I make and gift my quilts to be used and loved to death (threads) :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the cute row. I guess I lean toward the traditional quilts and applique.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the cute row. I guess I lean toward the traditional quilts and applique.
ReplyDeleteYour squirrels & corn cobs are adorable! I LOVE your Fox and Friends quilt and would be sooo happy to win a copy of your pattern!
ReplyDeleteAs far as what type of quilter I am, other than fairly new to the game, I seem to be tending toward modern quilts. For instance, I have a Science Fair quilt pinned and ready to quilt. Other than the block shape, my sister's Apple Core quilt (Large Template) was far from traditional...
Oh thank you for awesome blocks! My terriers will love them! They go nuts after squirrels! I'm a traditional modern quilter and go with what moves me and the saying close enough is good enough lol!
ReplyDeleteI do love paper piecing, but any kind of pieced quilt works for me! Of course, I love all of your designs! Thanks for all you do for us!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the great blocks! Your designs are amazing.
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love your row! Thank you for the chance to win.
ReplyDeleteForgot to mention that I gravitate towards modern quilting and paper piecing.
DeleteI'm not sure I really have a style, but I prefer small prints and don't really like lots of empty space in my quilts.
ReplyDeletejen dot barnard at btinternet dot com
I would consider my quilting style to be modern. I like the design and layout of modern style rather than the traditional flying geese, half-square triangle, Dresden, etc. Improv quilting is exciting too!
ReplyDeleteI'm a beginner. I have pp, and done block cutting. and some applique
ReplyDeleteI do regular piecing but hope to try paper piecing soon. I absolutely love your row by row pattern!
ReplyDeleteI'm basically a traditional quilter and I love hand applique.
ReplyDeletelin.web.28 at gmail dot com
I'm a very eclectic quilter, I love piecing, paper piecing, applique, and any new techniques I can learn. cdahlgren at live dot com
ReplyDeleteI guess I'm a traditional quilter. I like the old and vintage style quilts too. I most enjoy making baby quilts and usually create my own.
ReplyDeleteI guess I'm a traditional quilter. I like the old and vintage style quilts too. I most enjoy making baby quilts and usually create my own.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure what to describe my style. I love piecing and applique both hand and machine. I love working with batiks and hand dyed fabrics. I enjoy a little bit of everything!
ReplyDeleteI love your patterns. I am a beginner quilter and so far my style is traditional, following the pattern to a T.
ReplyDeleteGreat blocks! So "usable" for many things beyond the row along.
ReplyDeleteI'd have to say my 'style' is a combination of traditional and modern…just depends on what I'm working on. Thanks for the cute pattern!!!
ReplyDeletecwayons(at)yahoo(dot)com
Your row is just too cute. It just screams Fall!!
ReplyDeleteI have to say this is so cute. I think I am a traditional quilter

ReplyDeleteI am a beginner quilter that loves purple and pastels. I have dabbled in both machine and hand quilting. Love your row and your quilt designs.
ReplyDeleteI'm a beginner quilter. I'm just getting started and trying new things
ReplyDeleteI've been quilting for 18 years and do a little bit of everything. I've really been making an effort to learn and try new techniques this year. I consider myself a contemporary quilter, but am not sure any one label (beyond just "quilter) really fits me.
ReplyDeleteI love modern quilting, with bright bold colours
ReplyDeleteYour rows are so cute! I'd call myself an eclectic quilter. I use all kinds of different fabrics and styles. It depends on who the quilt is for. Thanks for the fun!
ReplyDeleteBeing a newbie, I haven't really found my style yet. :)
ReplyDeletecraftyccain@gmail.com
I really like your row design, especially the ears of corn. I'd like to use that in some placemats.
ReplyDeleteForgot to mention - I primarily like traditional quilt patterns and fabrics, sewn in modern speedy ways. I have recently starting working more with precuts to save cutting time, and have been expanding my boundaries to use more modern fabrics instead of just the traditional prints.
ReplyDeleteI like all styles of quilting, from traditional to modern and all colours.
ReplyDeleteJust love these runners. They are so autumn as we would say over here! I think I feel a squirrel block or two coming on!!! x
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous fall table runner! Love all of it - the squirrels, the acorn and definitely the CORN!!!Super cute
ReplyDeleteLove this pattern I would love to win. I'm write a post too!

ReplyDeleteI've been following your blog for a while now. I think the fox quilt is really sweet.
ReplyDeleteAs far as my own quilting, I love bright colors and modern design. Love your patterns!
ReplyDeleteI love your row!! It's adorable!! 😊😊😊
ReplyDeleteI'm a pretty traditional quilter. I love traditional blocks and lots of symmetry. I've done lots of samplers. Sometimes I like traditional blocks twisted or put together in new ways, or combined with another block for new secondary patterns. I love just about any star, and paper-pieced ones especially. And I like to make anything that catches my attention, like cute elephants! ;-)
ReplyDeletereillyr2(at)hotmail(dot)com
I am a modern quilter. I really like using solids. Your fox pattern really is terrific.

I came very late to this Row-Along. I went to your pattern page to get your pattern, however, I didn't see it. Is it still available?
ReplyDelete
