This little turtle pillow was made using a block from my Elephant Parade pattern. I just upped the size by 1.5 and added borders around the block to fit this 13" x 20" pillow form. My niece was coming for a visit from Wisconsin and I wanted to make her something that would be both useful and pretty. I knew that she was very fond of turtles. But I had no idea what her favourite colours were. So I just dug into my stash to find some happy prints!
In all the times I have used applique on a project, I have been leery of quilting over the actual applique shapes. But no more.
For the back and binding, I chose this Garden Aquarella from the Naturella collection by Art Gallery Fabrics that I purchased back in June from Canadian National Fabric for a steal. It really is a beautiful print, goes so well with the fabrics used in the front, and it is so soft!
The zipper is hidden beneath this flap on the back.
This Happy Turtle pillow was the 52nd use of my 100 labels
ordered from Ikaprint.
It's a long train ride home again. It's nice to know there will be a Happy Turtle to keep my niece company on the way. And to help make the trip that much more comfortable!

ReplyDeleteSuch bright & happy colors! I know the turtle will have a new best friend. I've been surprised that even something as simple as a travel pillow can mean so much. I have never made one with a zipper closing in the back and love the hidden flap. May have to add this to my try it next time! May I grab the picture and put a link on my blog?

ReplyDeleteI don't have a hard time quilting over my appliqué (maybe because I don't do much of it!), but do have a hard time quilting through the faces (particularly the eyes!) of any critters in the pattern or print!
ReplyDeleteAdorable and completely perfect! Love the hidden zipper idea. I've already got too many throw pillows, but I might re-cover some of them; the turtle would be a great bit of whimsy to brighten up my livingroom.

ReplyDeleteWhat a fun pillow! (And I bet it came in handy on the ride home.) I just read on Bonnie Hunter's Quiltville blog the other day that quilting through appliques is actually good for them. Should the quilt become a cherished antique, the quilting stabilizes the applique so it doesn't fall apart over time. Think of all your applique quilts lasting forever, now!
