Hillside Houses QAL finish

After all these weeks of piecing the blocks...
And fixing a few last minute mistakes...
Hillside Houses is finished!

I lucked out when looking for what to use for the backing. Wanting to use some of my older stashed fabrics, I found a few yards of this pretty clam shell print called Yoshiko from Blank Quilting 2006, which was also used for the binding. I made a pieced backing with a grey strip down the middle made from Widescreen Crosshatch in Grey by Caroline Friedlander for Robert Kaufman Fabrics.

I really had no idea how I was going to quilt this. But when the time came, I went with Superior Threads' Omni #3023 in Light Grey on top and in the bobbin. And made those organic wavy lines using my walking foot. The grey thread blends in nicely with all the bright Kona cotton solids on the front and with that bright backing.

There have been many inquiries as to how I quilt those wavy lines. And requests for a tutorial. So this time I got my daughter to film while I was quilting and I have uploaded this short video if you are interested. This is my video debut!

The binding was sewn first to the front of the quilt. And then "stitched in the ditch" along the binding from the front to catch the fold on the back. This was my fourth attempt at this method and I am getting better at it. It's difficult to get a consistent width of the binding folded over to the back of the quilt. I think I will try glue basting the fold over next time and see how that goes. I love the scalloped look of that print along the binding edges!

This Hillside Houses quilt was the 43rd use of my 100 labels
ordered from Ikaprint.

The Hillside Houses is offered as a free quilt along,
by Cristina of Pretty Little Quilts,
and the details are available here.

Thank you for a really fun quilt along, Cristina!

This Hillside Houses quilt finished at approximately 60" x 75"and is for sale in my Etsy Shop here. Kinda have my fingers crossed that this one doesn't sell. I have never actually kept one of my quilts for myself before and this one is the perfect size for me!

Linking up to Finish it up Friday with
Amanda Jean of Crazy Mom Quilts

And with Adrienne of Chezzetcook Modern Quilts.
She's hosting TGIFF this week!

  4. Your quilt is gorgeous! I love it! And I agree with the others, you should keep it if you like it. Sadly, I did not get the video? But I look forward to it in the future,
    Beth

  7. Absolutely adorable. Now that I see it all finished, I wish I'd sewed along! The video didn't come through on my iPad, so I'll try again on my laptop later this morning. Have a great day and a wonderful weekend!

  8. I use the same binding method, and have had the same issue with the inconsistent width on the back. I tried glue basting, and still had problems, especially on the corners, so I tried the Clover Wonder Clips. What a difference! I just lined up the edge of the binding in the same spot on the clip, and it turned out so much better! I still had a spot or two to fix because I wobbled when I attached the binding to the front, but it was minor compared to my previous attempts. Definitely my go-to method, now!

BTW, I love how your quilt turned out!

  9. Wow. Love it!! You never keep any of your quilts??? Thanks for the tutorial...I'm still trying to perfect that quilting technique.

  10. I love how that thread blends in with the fabric - amazing that it does all the way through all the colors - you have never kept one of your quilts!! you need to change that and keep one to enjoy :)

  11. Stunning Lorna... I love the look of that quilt and your pictures are so beautiful. I have also tried that binding method many times and haven't perfected it yet but I will!

  18. I'm so excited Lorna to get mine quilted! I'm sending it out in July. I've been wondering how to get it quilted because I didn't want to lose the effect. I really like the wavy lines. I was concerned an all over would ruin the 3-D effect, but not at all. This is perfect!

  19. Love those photos! Great spot. And though I've liked the quilt before, the quilted/bound version is stunning. (By now I should be used to the difference between finished top and really finished!) Fun video demo. I'm guessing your next move was to go back to the top and sew down another row, not turn the quilt. Please clarify if not. knitnkwilt.wordpress.com

    1. Yes, my next move would be to go back to the top and sew down another row, not turn the quilt. That's a good question, Claire!

  20. Yay! Beautiful finish. I'm so excited to see your video too! My organic wavy lines NEVER come out as nice and smooth as yours! Do you pin or spray baste? I've never heard of machine binding as you describe but hopefully there's another video tute in the near future for it once you perfect it?

  21. I'm sure you'll be disappointed again. There is no way this quilt won't sell, and you won't get to keep it after all. It's just too fantastic to not sell! {{Hugs!}}

  22. Once again you have blown me away with your quilt. The wavy line is my go to quilting method for machine quilting. I save the fancy stuff for hand quilting. Great job on this one. It is one more in my overflowing bucket list. Can't wait for the next quilt from you. Debbie

  23. what a great quilt, and thsaks for your video on how you quilted it if only it was that easy!!!

  24. I can't wait to start mine, I got the pattern on Craftsy after seeing it here. I love this quilt just the way it is and I don't way that often. Really beautiful Lorna.

  25. Beautiful! I'm not usually a house quilt fan, but this quilt is great! Love the colors and the quilting.

  26. I've always enjoyed your wavy lines. Now they look so easy to do and you look like you're going full speed. Must be a pretty fast way to quilt a quilt!

  27. Your quilt turned out terrific. The quilting is just right for it. Thank you so much for the tutorial. That look do-able.

  28. A Fabulous Finish Lorna, as always! The quilting is perfect and I liked watching you in action very much! Love how the grey thread looks good with every color.
I did a binding like that and it definitely helped a lot to glue baste it to the back first, before the final stitch in the ditch from the front.
I can't believe you never kept a quilt for yourself Lorna. This one's a beauty too!

  29. Those colors are beautiful!

  30. I love your finish, the colors are so pretty! I've been gone so mine isn't finished yet. I've been worried how to quilt it and what color I should use. I think I will copy you and use gray as well :)

  31. It's been fun watching this quilt evolve. Your happy houses with brightly lit windows look so inviting. Really nice job. Glue basting is a great idea. I've used it a few times to match a backing and it really does work and doesn't clog the needle (which I was afraid of.) I like your fabric choice for the binding, too. I would never want to wish your quilts don't sell, but if you love this one...

  32. High time you kept one for yourself, don't you think? If you put this for sale, you can surely say goodbye to it. I like your video. I just tried quilting with my walking foot for the first time yesterday, and I love it. It just might lure me away from FMQ (although I really hope not for good), but your wavy lines seem like the best of both types of quilting.

  33. I just ADORE this quilt. I have to save my pennies, because it is worth every cent!! XX!

  34. This turned out lovely, Lorna! You should definitely keep it for yourself! As for binding, have you tried Susie's Magic Binding? It really is magic. I'm just learning to machine bind and it turned out great for me. So much easier than trying to catch the edge on the back! But a beautiful quilt, no matter the binding!

  35. I really like this quilt, the colors you used along with the quilting are very nice. Great video too!

  36. What a great finish, Lorna! The scalloped fabric on the binding is a great touch to such a fun quilt top. :)
