But this Country Lanes baby quilt is a delightful whisper from the past.
While preparing for my new series, Top 10 Tips for New Quilters, I needed to practice some quick and easy piecing methods to provide pictures for the posts. And figured I might as well use those pieces to make a quilt.
The simple palette of blue and white, coupled with a traditional Irish Chain design, gives this quilt a vintage feel. It's subtle and dainty. And refreshing.
And just the right size for basting at my kitchen table.
Russell, and Teddy, came along for an outdoor photo shoot on the old hay wagon.
The sun was sunny and the wind was windy. But behaved long enough to get a few good shots of this simple quilt. Using 7.5" finished blocks, the Country Lanes baby quilt finished 37" x 52".
Keeping it simple, I quilted Country Lanes using an extended zig-zag stitch. Also known as Honey Comb quilting, this stitch was a "must have" feature I looked for when shopping for a new machine at the beginning of this year. Aunt Elna, as I affectionately call her, allows a maximum stitch width of 7.0 for this extended zig-zag pattern. I lengthened the stitches to 3.0 and quilted along and between each seam line from top to bottom.
This project was the 12th use of my 100 labels ordered from MyOwnQuiltLabels.
And this precious patchwork is now listed along with the other Quilts for Sale in my Etsy shop.....
Where you can also find the pattern!

Love the quilting Lorna. I have that stitch on my machine but have never used it for quilting. I'm off to the machine to give it a try. I really like the look.
ReplyDeleteSo beary cute! Love the blue and white!!
ReplyDeleteIt may be a 'simple' quilt but is really cool - the quilting just makes it sing! I have to mess with my machine. . . that stitch is awesome!!
ReplyDeleteAdorable quilt! I'll have to try that quilting stitch one of these days. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet baby quilt Lorna ! And refreshing ( great word) ! Love the quilting....I'm learning to be friends with my walking foot...I've done straight stitching with it, and I'm pretty sure I have a stitch like that on Janome .... so/sew you have inspired me to try that on some baby quilts hanging in the closet waiting for some quilting love.
ReplyDeleteI just love the simplicity of this quilt, and that blue has to be my favourite colour!
ReplyDeleteAdorable! I love the simplicity. Beautiful Lorna!

ReplyDeleteSo cute Lorna! Great finish
ReplyDeleteThis turned out so well, Lorna! Fun how your series on tips helped you create such a different quilt.
ReplyDeleteSuch a sweet little baby quilt. I love to use that big ole zig zag stitch. This one looks so cozy and warm.
ReplyDeleteLove everything about this quilt Lorna!! Sometimes simple is best :)

Love this cute quilt! Did you have any issues with the zig zag stitch distorting your quilt top? I just finished quilting a baby quilt this way and the top pulled a bit as I was stitching.
ReplyDeleteLovely!
ReplyDeleteTeddy looks a little scared up that high! This is a fabulous quilt. It is so simple and stunning.
ReplyDeleteSuch a sweet quilt, Lorna! I love how simple and beautiful it is.
ReplyDeleteFresh and sweet Lorna! Love the swiggle quilting!
ReplyDeleteLots to love about this post ... My machine also has that stitch. It never occurred to me to use it for quilting -- or really anything at all. It looks so lovely on this quilt. I'm always amazed at how crisp your quilts look. I'm always fighting puckers here and there. What's your secret?!
ReplyDeleteVery refreshing.
ReplyDeleteI really like Irish Chains - yours is fabulous. And your quilting choice is perfect, what life it adds to this beauty!!! Visiting from Finish it up Friday.

ReplyDeleteBright and fresh is always good. I sure love your Teddy!
ReplyDeleteThe quilt is a breath of fresh air! I love it.
ReplyDeleteLorna - simply stunning. Sometimes you can't go wrong with the simple, tried and true patterns. Love the colours and yes, it looks like a breath of fresh air.
ReplyDeleteOh that came out beautifully! I love the texture the quilting gives to it. It takes it from simple to stunning. Love it!
ReplyDeleteClassic and timeless -- wonderful!
ReplyDeleteIt is very nice quilt and pretty pics. So clean!
ReplyDeleteI need to remember to use the fancy stitches on my machine more often. I've used a zig zag stitch once before, but I always forget about them when I'm thinking of what to do. It looks so great against this quilt!
ReplyDeleteI love this quilt and your choice of machine quilting, even more.
