Paired up with some bright Kona cotton solids, these fun charms squares are now all framed in and have been sashed in Kona Snow. When it came time to add the borders, I needed a refresher course and used my mitered border tutorial.
Fold the corner diagonally with right sides facing and lining up the raw edges of the outside borders. Place the 45 degree line of your acrylic ruler on the seam line of your block and draw a line from the corner of the block to the edge of the outside border.
Pin along the drawn line, being careful to match points where the inner borders intersect with the drawn line. Beginning at the corner of the block, sew toward the outside edge, backstitching at the start and end of your seam.
Press the seam open and ensure that your inner border matches.
Trim seam to 1/4".
Repress the trimmed seam open.
Press again from the front. Ta, da!
It has been quite a while since I did a full size bed quilt. And this one is a good double bed size at 84" x 96".
Believe me... This top is too long for my hanging rod to allow this top to hang without dragging on the floor. And my floor is too dirty to take the chance with the white background. So this will have to do for now!
Now what to do for the backing? I would really like to keep it simple and find a wide back fabric this time around. I have my eye on some Widescreen by Carolyn Friedlander for Robert Kaufman Fabrics. Let's see if I can get a hold of some without paying some outrageous shipping charges!
And by the way.... Do you have any quilting suggestions?

This finished out so wonderfully! Great tip for the border, too. :) As far as the quilting goes, the pinwheel formed by the blocks makes me think of spring flowers, so a repeating flower pattern might be nice. Or a geometric square meander to pick up on the geometry instead. I would probably doodle on paper a bit to figure out what I liked best - softening the blocks with a rounded quilted pattern or reinforcing the edges with a more crisp and geometric quilted pattern. Looking forward to seeing what you decide!
ReplyDeletevery nice fresh looking quilt!!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh - I just love this quilt. It is totally adorable. I love the quilting suggestions that Yvonne provided. I am sure what you finally decide will be perfect. I love Kona Snow. I buy it by the bolt. I am totally inspired by this quilt!
ReplyDeleteI love it! The pattern, the colors, everything. Beautiful quilt.
ReplyDeleteI love this quilt. Do you have a pattern for it, or a tutorial? I have a lot of charm packs and am always looking for a great pattern to use them with.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt. I love all the bright colors you chose to use. Is this a pattern you designed?

ReplyDeleteThis is such a happy quilt top, I love it! And those mitered borders are fantastic, thanks for the tutorial :)
ReplyDeleteLove this top! It would work in lots of different ideas and fabric as well!
ReplyDeleteI think quilting with the ongoing multi-squares that is pretty popular for square quilting would look great in this! That or custom in the white and random different things done in the blocks.
Is this just one charm pack? It looks great. I love the solids paired with it. I think a curvy quilting design would be good.
ReplyDeleteThis is lovely and I love the corners. Simply beautiful.

ReplyDeleteFabulous quilt and so "summery". Love it.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful, fresh and bright flimsie, Lorna! Your mitered corners are fantastic and I'd like to use your tutorial on my next bordered project. I can't wait to see what you come up with for the quilting as you have made a gorgeous canvas!
ReplyDeleteLove, love , love everything about this quilt. Do you have a pattern? I love the colors too. They are so happy and bright. Can't suggest a quilting pattern since I always struggle with that decision myself.
ReplyDeleteThis is so bright and cheery! I think an overall quilt pattern (vs. custom) would look nice. Maybe feathered flowers (something like this: http://www.sewthankful.com/Frisky-Feathers-quilting-pantograph-pattern-Lorien-Quilting.html). Also, how did you create this block? Is it partial seams? I can't seem to figure it out by just looking at it.
ReplyDeleteNice Lorna! I love the small bits of prints surrounded by the solids!
ReplyDeleteLovely, Lorna!!!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love this top! Happy and so clean. I can wait to see what you decide on for quilting.
ReplyDeleteJust beautiful, Lorna. I've pinned the mitred corners tutorial for future reference... lots to learn first.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful job. My husband was just asking me why I don't mitre my corners. Now I don't have a good excuse. I'll have to bookmark this.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous quilt. Thanks for the quick tutorial on mitred borders. I've done single boders but never mitred more than that. Time to have a go I think xx

ReplyDeleteLove me and my sister fabrics and they look really good in this setting - so colourful and vibrant. Something playful likes Kites or stars in an all over meander?
