If it were me I would do a loopy design in a lime green. I would like to try the Bottom Line.

ReplyDeletefor each flower, echo the outer hexagon, and for the center hexagon, something like a star or heart. Or each each outer flower, and inner on the outer hexagons, and do something special in the inner hexagon.

What about bubbles for the flower centers and loops for the 'petals'? Either a neutral thread or play with different colors. I'd love to try Superior's Bottom Line. Look forward to seeing this beautiful quilt all finished :)
ReplyDeleteI would pop corn quilt it, using Superior Bottom line 623. It's a neutral that blends with everything and my absolute favorite. The pop corn would give you a secondary pattern of flowers.
ReplyDeleteI can visualize a flower in the centers (like an infinity sign that goes over and over to make the flower) and then echo quilting the petal hexies, making them quite flat. I'd like to try some Masterpiece cotton machine piecing/quilting thread.

ReplyDeleteI like the idea of echo quilting and then a star or flower in the centers. I would like to try the invisible threads, Monopoly or I love Variegated threads.
ReplyDeleteYou could quilt petals in each of the outer hexagons of each flower and either stipple or pebble inside the middle. That would really emphasis the flower component of the design. I've always been curious about the Masterpiece threads. I like King Tut quite a lot and usually sew with all-cotton, so it seems like it would be a good thread for me. Thanks for the chance!

ReplyDeleteI think echoing the flower shape in a much less abstract form would be great for the quilting. Fun flower shapes over each of those hexie flowers.
ReplyDeleteAs for threads, I have enjoyed everything I've tried from Superior. Masterpiece is awesome for piecing and even top-stitching binding down. Magnifico is amazing in the long arm and does a great job both in the embroidery machine and as a top thread for top-stitching applique. The Bottom Line is great for being... well, the bottom thread. I've used it both in my sewing machine and the long arm. I even have a bobbin for the long arm set with the right tension just for this thread. I have some Fantastico, but haven't tried it, yet. I love the color combinations! King Tut is beautiful as a quilting thread and holds up great to the higher speeds of the long arm. I think the only thing I haven't tried is So Fine as a top thread.
You'll find the perfect quilting for your hexies and it will be great!
I really do not know much about thread, but I went to there web site and looked around. I think that I would like to try the King Tut. Thanks so much for the opportunity.

How about a curved line from corner to corner of the centers, then a loop-t-loop on the rest of the flower. I'd love to try something variegated. Wish I could remember the name of the bright cones you just purchased for your last quilt. This quilt is sooooo pretty! I think it will be beautiful no mater what design you quilt it in.
ReplyDeleteHow big are the hexie's? On my Grandmother's Flower Garden (that were 1 inch each side), the Amish lady hand quilted just inside the ring of each color. Think it would be hard to match all the colors of the hexie's, so probably would just go with a plain white. I've thought that if the hexie's were less than 1 inch, I would just tack the center color and then quilt midway around the next color ring. Always curious what others are doing. Have never used Superior Thread. Take care and stay warm. Robert, from northern Iowa. . . .

ReplyDeleteThe lime green sounds like a great thread for this. I think maybe something different in each flower to make them pop separately??? I have only tried superiors bottom line, I would like to try some of their cotton, 50wt. to compare:)

Outline / echo kwilt the hexies..use a white or light gray thread of your choice. Here is a link to a pillow I kwikted.

ReplyDeleteYour quilt is beautiful! I like some of the other suggestions for quilting - especially the pebbles in the middle and flower loops in the flower part of the hexies. And I also think an all-over spiral or other curvy design would be nice. The hexies will visually hold their own, and a curvy all-over pattern will give your garden a natural organic texture. Thanks so much for sharing! I would love to try Masterpiece or King Tut. I've never used Superior threads, so any would be a treat!

ReplyDeleteHi Lorna, Love your flowers! How about doing something different like a BEE. The one you have on your button looks easy enough. You could make the bee flying line a little loop and then start on his tail work around to the wings, make a loop, sew across the body and back, make another wing, and then back to the tail, then you go off in another direction to a new bee.

I would love Masterpiece or King Tut. I saw a Hexagon quilt the other day where they put a "flower" design so to speak sort of a loop to loop in each block. Must have taken forever but was beautiful. I would use a color that stands out whatever you choose. Beautiful job.
ReplyDeletePebble in the pink centers, swirl in the green centers - match your thread colors to those colors. For the petals of the flowers you could do a feather-petal design with 2 feathers per hexi that would emphasize the flowers. I would use So Fine and match the thread to the flowers - sorry, a bit of changing your threads but if you do all of one color before you change, it's not so bad! I would love to try some of the Glow in the Dark threads! Love Superior Threads also - King Tut, So Fine, Bottom Line are all my go-to choices for quilting!

ReplyDeleteI agree with most of these comments. Accentuating the flower shapes would be nice. Bubbles in the centres and something that starts at the base of the petals and radiates to the outer edges like a feather design or just some gently curving lines. Yellow centres and off-white petals maybe? As for threads, I've never tried superior threads so I have no idea what type to try!

Lorna this hexagon quilt is awesome! What a bright and happy color combination! I haven't a clue how to quilt hexies, but I would go with white thread. Maybe some spirals or circles would be nice!

If it were my quilt I would do a flower design in a random pattern on just some of the flowers and then choose another design for the rest of the flowers. I think a lighter shade of yellow would work. I love Sew Fine or is it SoFine-I always forget!! I have not had good luck with Bottom line in my longarm for some reason.
ReplyDeleteHow to quilt the quilt, that is the question huh? I usually have to have a stare down with my quilts before I decide!! I think a nice flower motif would be wonderful. Making the center a smaller circle in the center of the flower then petals for each one. Hmmm that may be too predictable. I do like the idea of the lime green thread. I've heard more than once that works wonderfully. And if you use so fine thread it just melts right into that quilt!

I like the idea of flower petals in the outer and pebbles in the center. I think I'd do it randomly unless you want a really densely quilted quilt. I've used kig tut and am presently using bottom line for appliqué so I'd like to maybe try so fine or maybe magnifico.
