I have been wanting to design a quilt using curved seams.... I have been admiring Julie Pickles' Mod Pop for quite a while... I REALLY like her design and even the colours of fabrics she used.
I don't have a lot of experience sewing curves. I googled around and found a great demonstration here.
I made a template and did a few practice pieces. But I will be the first one to admit, there is rarely anything scant about my 1/4" anything. So I made a slightly larger template because I would prefer to be able to trim my blocks after sewing - ensuring they are exactly 5 1/2" and square - before sewing them into a row.
Sew today, I got serious with the few doodles I have been working on. And I have come up with a design that I am happy with. The plan is to do a queen size quilt using 5" finished size blocks. But to start with, I am going to make a crib quilt using a 3" block.
The crib quilt will be using about 12 different pink fabrics from the 'stash' and accented with white. I spent the whole afternoon tracing templates and cutting pieces, counting, figuring and looking forward to tomorrow. When I will get to SEW!
I sure hope the sewing goes well and I get a lot accomplished... The kids are on March break and it will be their first school day home.... Hope there are no complaints of, "I'm bored!" Then again - the dishes need done! Awwww! Instant silence - How peaceful....
What is with the curves? I am so drawn by them at the moment. The next retreat I do in October I'm planning to teach a curvy project. Between that & brighter colours, my quilts are a changing. :-) Whenever my kids say "I'm bored" I say "Let me find you something to do". They quickly decide that whatever THEY can find to do will be miles more exciting than my idea. Means we're doing a good job. lol
ReplyDeleteI don't know what is with the curves... But I am also drawn by them. I guess a design is quite limited by only using straight lines. Sew I am looking forward to where this will lead. Change is good! Regarding the kids.... I agree, we must be doing a good job!
DeleteWill look forward to seeing your latest design!
ReplyDeleteThanks Sherry! I look forward to sharing more about it!
DeleteAfter a few blocks, you will be a pro. The hardest things about curves are starting the project!
ReplyDeleteHave fun!
Thanks for the confidence booster, Cynthia! I appreciate it!
