Let's Bee Social #153

Welcome to the Let's Bee Social!

It's the last day of November.
So that means it is only one more month until.....

Canada's BIG Birthday!

Canada 150th Anniversary - Lap 66" x 66"

Canada 150th Anniversary - Baby 40" x 50"

Canada will be turning 150 years old in 2017.
And I have a plan for both a baby and lap quilt design.
The pattern is written and it's testing time!

For this project I will be revisiting my MOD Bear Paw and the Forest Friends quilt designs. This time the Bear, which is the same size it was in the earlier design, will be in two versions - a Polar Bear and a Black or Brown Bear. And each will be hanging out with it's food of choice. Those wee seal pups and their big black eyes are so adorable! And the salmon look so fresh! The Loon and the Canadian Goose are new too!

The Canadian Beaver that is center stage in this design was used in the Forest Friends quilt, but this time I have doubled the size of that block. It now measures a whopping 18" x 26". Looking forward to showing off my great big beaver!

Now... It's your turn for Show and Tell!!!

Sew Fresh Quilt Bee - November Link Up

It's time for the first Sew Fresh Quilt Bee linky party!

I am really having a wonderful time working on these Bee Blocks!

I don't usually sew without a plan already laid out. But I am finding this improv style of piecing to be nice and relaxing. Not a whole lot of though or planning going on here. I am keeping my charm squares whole and am piecing in a wonky slab block style.

First I found some scraps in prints and solids that went with the colours found in the charm squares. Then I added a slanty bit to the side of each charm and trimmed them top and bottom in preparation for the next scrap.

Then I added a bit more, in no set order. Each time trimming before adding a little more. If my scraps weren't wide enough, I would piece them together. Then I trim the block to 12 and a half inches square.
Here are my first three blocks that I showed you earlier this month.

So that brings my total to 11 finished blocks. I have 21 more charms to go, for a total of 32.

Black Birds {Redo x2}

This is the third time I have made this Black Bird quilt design. You can read about the first quilt here and the second quilt here. I had listed my first Black Bird baby quilt in my Etsy shop and it sold at the end of June. I made the second Black Bird quilt to help promote the pattern. Although I did not list it for sale, I did have someone make a request to purchase the quilt. So I now had the pleasure of making this quilt once again!

Here below you can see that the second quilt had a nice variety of blacks and grays for the crows and this one featured a blue bird....

This time I chose a lot of darker fabrics - no grays - and then found a nice red plaid for the interloper....

It is really fun to make the same quilt more than once because it gives me a chance to change things up. And to try out some ideas that I passed on during the first making. For this one I added more red to match that plaid love bird. The backing is a geometric print in red. And the red plaid was used in the making of the flanged binding.

Just like in the original Black Birds quilt, for the quilting, I used a variegated King Tut in Rosetta Stone thread from Superior Threads, used previously on those American Eagle and Canadian Beaver cushions. And then chose a black polyester thread for the backing.

Here you can see the details of the backing and flanged binding. If you are looking to add a little pop of colour to your next binding, you can find the tutorial here.

The Black Birds pattern is listed for sale in my pattern shop here.

The "Black Birds" baby quilt finished at 40" x 46"
and was the 14th use of my 2nd edition of 100 labels
ordered from Ikaprint.

Come for the show!
Where: The Oakville Sewing Centre located at 488 Speers Road, Oakville, ON
When: Saturday, November 26, 1:00 - 3:00 p.m.
Fee: $25 plus HST (includes $10 voucher toward the purchase a quilt pattern)

Hope to see you there!

Let's Bee Social #152

Welcome to the Let's Bee Social!

I made it! The past two weeks were jam packed with shows and workshops. But I strategically scheduled an early leave for my show in Orillia. I have been in touch with Sue for a while now. She has been purchasing my patterns to carry in her shop that is located very close to Orillia, in Severn, Ontario. Here are a few photos from my time spent shopping at Thimbles & Things.

You know I'm going to be a sucker for a print with birds or animals. How could I resist?

It was so nice to be able to browse in Sue's quilt shop. I rarely get a chance to look for fabric in real life - and mostly purchase through online shops. And this place had a lot of quilt related stuff to see. Not just fabric. There are threads, rulers and notions. And the largest selection of patterns and books I have ever seen! They also have a workshop set up for classes. And they provide longarm quilting, too. AND they are also Pfaff retailer. If you can't make it up to see her in person, you can do a virtual shop here at Thimbles & Things.
