This remake of the WoW-E! quilt was made using solids from the ColorWorks Premium Solid 9000 collection by Northcott Fabrics. The colours were chosen to match this cute Woodland Friends flannel backing.
This time I changed things up by using only 12 blocks. Then added a multiple mitered border to make this a crib size quilt. My multiple mitered border tutorial can be found here.
I put the completed blocks up on my design wall. And then switched them around a bit. But I liked the first layout best. So I switched them back!
When it came time for the quilting, Aunt Elna and I decided to take on a spiral. It has been a while since using this method last. But this is the first time using a single spiral.
A single spiral makes quite a statement. The tricky part is to get the beginning of the spiral to look good. I traced a circle around the cornerstone using a pencil. Then quilted, one stitch at a time, until there was a quarter inch gap around the circle. From there the going gets easier as you continue the spiral out to the edges of the quilt.

I did a bazillion of them on a recent quilt, and you are absolutely right about the beginning. The starting is the hard part, but then it is smooth sailing after that.

ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I swear I learn something new every time I come to your site ;) quilting a continuous circle in the center and then going off of that circle is just plain genius!! I've never seen it done that way before and have always struggled with trying to get that center spiral to look even a little bit passable. Thanks for a major aha moment :D

ReplyDeleteThe quilting is perfect on this quilt! I love the pattern, the fabric...oh just everything. Is it as wonderful as I think it is to explore a quilt pattern a second time with different fabrics? There's a couple I'd like to go and do again but I have too many quilt pattern ideas to do in my head to consider revisitng old patterns!

ReplyDeleteAwesome! I love the borders. I sometimes think I spend too much time rearranging things on my design wall. I explained to my niece this morning about one quilt that I made sure all the pine trees pointed up, because that is how trees grow. In 18 months of use no one even noticed!
